Off-Season To-Do List

Long time reader...first time poster... The game tonight really made me start to think about next year. Here's a list of to-do items.

1) Get the #1 pick in the draft
I don't care how this happens--whether it is a trade involving the 6th and 12th picks...or the 6th pick and Millsap...just make it happen. We need a PG and Kyrie Irving is the man for the job.

2) Re-Sign AK
Yeah--you probably think that I'm crazy...but this team needs a 3 and AK has stated that he wants to stay in Utah. So, re-sign him for 7-8 million per year and deal with the injuries.

3) Pick up the team option on CJ Miles
Somebody has to play when AK has back spasms. CJ is inching along...progress is progress no matter how slowly it occurs.

4) Trade Millsap/Harris/Okur (could make #1 come to pass)
I love 'Sap...he's a beast...but he isn't going to thrive next to Al Jefferson. The Jazz need to first get a PG, then get a defensive minded 5, and lastly focus on getting someone who can stroke the three. The Jazz need to plan on Jefferson/Favors down low. If each of these big guys can develop a consistent mid-range jumpshot...ala Karl Malone...then it could be deadly.

5) Groom Hayward to play the 2.
The kid can stroke the three--and I think that he could become a solid wing defender. He needs lots of time and attention during the off-season because he's going to be the starting 2.

Potential Starting Lineup
PG: Irving
SG: Hayward
SF: AK
PF: Favors
C: Jefferson

This lineup gives you someone who can hit the three (Hayward) two wing defenders(Hayward and AK) a presence down low (Favors and Jefferson) and a PG who has received praise for being a good defender/decision maker/jump shooter.

Backups
PG: Watson
SG: Miles
SF: Miles/Evans
PF: Jefferson/Evans
C: Okur/Favors/Tomic*/Fesenko*

*Who knows what will happen with these two...this position is stacked...too many bodies and not enough PT. I think that Fesenko could be a serviceable player if he just had more playing time.

Tomic isn't ever going to play in the NBA. His buyout is insane. Besides, he's soft, unathletic, and too light to survive the NBA. For every one Pau there's 10 Darkos.

Dump AK, even if he wants to come back cheaply, we need to rid ourselves of injury prone weak minded slugs who force us to play one man down on offense. Dump ak, lets rid ourselves of all the Deron, Boozer, Sloan, etc cancer.

Pick up CJ's option. No brainer here.

Find a way to rid ourselves of Raja Bell.

Probably let Price go.

Get Hayward to gain 20 pounds. Harpring needs to work with him.

Get Evans to develop an offensive move... And put on weight.

Start Favors and develop him this offseason.

Shop Millsap, see what we can get. I like his attitude, but if he can get us something better....

Draft a wing.

Draft a backup PG or bigman...

Ship Fess's lazy *** back to the Ukraine. Once again, we need a fresh start. Lazy *** euro softies who care more about donuts and vacations cannot be placed on a franchise looking to completely change their entire atmosphere.

Wait and see what the new CBA beholds...

6) Give Harpring a job as an assistant coach. Or trainer. Or concessions worker. Just so my ears stop bleeding.

I disagree.
Total rebuild.
Build the team around Favors, Hayward, and hopefully some good draft picks who can do esoteric things like make a shot, steal a pass, drive the ball, get a loose ball, rebound. and find an open shooter with a good pass.
Hayward seems more a SF to me, but I could be wrong. I am from an era when somebody 6-4 could be an all star PF.
I would like to get a whole team that can pass the ball. I don't like running every play through one PG with 4 guys who can't drive or pass the ball.

So no, I disagree with putting all resources towards the point guard position, as well as pegging Hywd at SF, exactly the opposite. Draft the best players you can. The Jazz need a wing and a big, preferably a SG and a C, just as much as a PG.

Welcome to the posting side.

1) In this case 6 + 12 = 4 or 5. I can't do the math in my head, but it definitely doesn't equal 1 (unless Minnesota pulls victory balls). Cleveland, Detroit, and Washington didn't tank for 6 & 12. Word on the street is Millsap is highly valued across the league. Your idea is interesting if Sap + one of the picks would do it, but the other teams all need stars so it's not happening.

2) Yeah, @ 7-8 I do. That is, unless you can convince him to quit injecting Tetanospasmin into his spinal cord.

3) I hate the way you make inching sound.

4) Okur didn't come to pass anything besides kidney stones. AJ already has a consistent mid-range jumpshot.

5) Good enough on Geerdan Hiyard.

Good post. Welcome to the board.

Where does Harris fit in all this?...2nd string?

And I don't really like AK for 7-8mil... I think we should low ball him and start our offer at about 3-5mil per and see if he REALLY likes Utah or is just saying that. One thing's for sure, he owes this franchise that after all the millions he's stolen from the Miller's over the years.

I still like the idea of using #6 on best player available and take our #12 (or higher depending on how bad we keep sucking) and move down a couple of slots to darft The Jimmer at backup PG to Harris.

Harris would be trade bait. Use him to Irving. I like Harris, but I don't see him as the PG of the future.

I don't see the benefit in drafting a load of 'good' players. To get to the NBA finals, the Jazz will need three solid pieces (potential all-stars). My blueprint gives you these pieces: Irving (PG) ~ Stocktonesque, Hayward (SG) ~ Horaneck with better defense, Favors (PF) ~ The UPS man.

I'm a BYU alum and a huge BYU fan...but I don't see Jimmer translating well to the Jazz. I hope I'm wrong--but for now--I hope that he doesn't end up in a Jazz uniform.

Don't go after Kyrie. I'm over the whole idea of getting an elite PG - it's fun but it doesn't equal championships (ie: Derek Fisher has how many rings?).

Best chance at being a stud wing is Harrison Barnes. Also a defensive center is imperative to a winning team. Don't know if the Jazz have that. Kanter is offensively great. Defense I don't know. But he's 6'11" - but not explosive, or so I've read. Valanciunis? Nah, Jazz already drafted a skinny euro in Tomic (though he may never come over).

With the 12th pick grab whoever falls, or grab a PG (Smith, Fredette, Knight - to name just 3. There are a lot of good PGs).

2) Re-Sign AK

How dare you. You son of a bitch.

First of all this is who we have undercontract next year

PG: Harris,
SG: Hayward, Bell
SF: Miles*
PF: Favors, Millsap, Evans***
C: Jefferson, Memo**

*Team Option
** May retire
*** Not Guaranteed

According to Shamsports with just those contracts we have 57 mil. This year's salary cap is 58.4 mil. We are unlikely to have significant cap space.

So at best the most we have 9 players under contract. So we will have to add at least 4.

As we a going to be missing the playoffs we have our own pick and the Nets. I believe we still have our 2nd round pick.

Unless we win the draft lottery we aren't going to be getting Irving. It is far more likely we will have the 6th and 12th picks.

So here is my offseason plan.

1. Off AK the vet's minimum and a role off the bench. If he takes it great. If not CJ gets to start.

2. Buy out Bell. He doesn't want to be here and we don't want him here.

3. We draft the two BPA's. For example we could end up with Derrick Williams and Leonard. Then you trade Millsap for one of Denver or Phoenix or Houston's extra wing players or two.

No AK please... didn't he get hurt again last night? Injury prone with no jump shot hurts us more than his periodic defensive efforts and offensive surges help us.

The way Barnes is playing and how everybody is talking about him, we are not going to get him with the #6 pick. Let's hope we move up with some luck. Agree with Bentley that he is the best prospect and if he works out, he is someone we never had in the shooting guard position (ability to make clutch shots and create for himself).

if we could get AK for the vet minimum it would be a no brainer, but considering its like a million dollars no way he signs for that. We have to have someone who can guard Durant next year that is all I got to say.

I do not want AK back simply because he is not going to take a big pay cut. He is not going to take $3 or $4 million to stay. Besides if he was "forced" to take a huge paycut and a backup role he would just pout. Another reason why I don't want him to stay is because he takes away minutes from our young players. The young players need to play and grow together. If the Jazz just play vets to stay competitive then they will just be in the same situation in a few years (young guys who need playing experience).

I would pick up CJs option because despite his flaws his contract is cheap. I wouldn't trade Millsap yet. He has the most value on the team but he is also one of the few warriors the Jazz have. However, trading him might be the only option after the next couple of drafts. I say wait until the Jazz make their picks and see if the new draftees/Favors are ready for prime time. Then I would try to package him and either Memo expiring/Bell for a player that is proven and fits the Jazz needs.

I would like to see Elson, Price, AK, Bell and Fess gone. I would only agree to keep Fess if he would commit to a summer training camp with Karl Malone.

I would try to draft two of the following players. Irving, Barnes, Williams, Kanter, Jimmer, Leonard, T. Jones, Hamilton, P. Jones or Nolan Smith.

AK also takes away the hard work mentality. Didn't Deron say something about him being the first out of practice every night. The least our veterans can do is show the rookies how to work hard. That's why I want Millsap still. Him and AJ will show the rest of the team how it's done.

To those of you that are campaigning for Barnes, I have sad news for you...one of the two scenarios will take place:

1) He won't declare and he'll be the #1 pick in the 2012 draft
2) He'll get drafted before #6
