What's new

WIll a jazz player get into the all star game?

I've read that AS does not count.
.....All-NBA, DPOY or MVP the previous season.
.....All-NBA team or DPOY in 2/3 previous seasons
.....MVP once in the previous three seasons
When Gobert wins DPOY and is on the all NBA team it's going to make his extension look like the best deal ever.

Thanks for clarifying that! I haven't read the specifics. Just glanced over it. Thought All-Star was probably included as well like in the Derrick Rose provision.

The problem with this new rule is it locks up the top superstars, making a frenzy of trade options for bubble all nba type players like Hayward. If Hayward doesn't hit the all nba threshold, the likelihood of him leaving goes up IMO. Paying him the supermax to keep the core intact is a no-brainer. If Hayward goes I think the ship sinks.

You're right, the financial incentive could be a problem. But if he's eligible for a supermax(10 yr vet max), our chances that management keeps Hood long term shrinks. What we gotta bet on is a 7 game first round exit against the Clippers or even reaching the 2nd round. The prospect of improvement and "better" alternatives not having cap space to offer make Utah.
Let's go through the specific teams:
East:
-Hawks are capped unless they part ways with Millsap or manage to trade Bazemore. If a) happens, Hayward won't even talk to them, in case of b) they'll have to send away tons of assets.
-Celtics got space and they'll talk to him. But in order to convince him they'll need to do something miraculous in the playoffs. I'd say short of beating the Raptors to challenge the Cavs they don't have enough leverage.
-Charlotte signed Hayward to his last sheet, so he'll at least meet them in early July out of respect. They don't have room right now and would need to trade Batum + Marvin or Marvin + MKG + Belinelli/Lamb to make room for Hayward. Does Hayward still want to go there then?
-Raptors don't have cap space unless they do something silly like trade Carroll, Ross and Joseph and lose the option to offer more than the MLE to Patrick Patterson which he'll laugh at and spit on it.
West:
-Spurs! If they manage to trade Pau Gasol and Tony Parker, they could sign Hayward and retain Patty Mills and still add some on top of that. Is it likely? Nope! But from a basketball standpoint it makes a lot of sense.

Conclusion: Basically it's the Celtics and they'd need to make a crazy case that they're able to challenge the Cavs long term while having a lot of weird skillsets on their roster. Is it impossible? No. Is it likely? Neither! It would still be very important for the Jazz long term to sign Hayward for 30 and not for 35 per year, because there are max players who are better than Gordon and part of overcoming those guys is do have more depth, of which a cheaper Hayward contract would allow a lot.

The sick thing about his short extension is that you're unlikely to get baited into a decline super max. He probably has an opt out at the end of the 3rd year. By then he's 28 years old and a 5 year extension for a lot will last through 33 at which point he'll probably have declined to a degree(The first 3 years still being worth his money) where ppl will stop throwing unreasonable amounts of cash at him. If he was on a 5 year plan you'd have to make the uncomfortable decision in 2022 at age 30, where he's probably a little bit behind his apex but not dropped off yet.

Both should make it, but if one guy gets screwed out of a spot I hope it's Rudy. Mostly because stuff like that lights a fire under him. But still, both should make it.

cp3 wont be playing in the all star game because of surgery, so could injury replacement be done, meaning chance of hayward getting in bigger

Will coaches vote for CP3 knowing that he deserves it but cannot play? Seems like a wasted vote. I assume coach voting starts this weekend after starters are announced on Thursday.

I wonder how they are going to report the results. Will they announce the total votes by player from press? Will they announce the total votes by player from player vote? How do they tally the totals. By percent of the vote? Not at all clear to me how they combine the fan, press and player vote.

They play a different position group, does this matter to who makes it? I honestly don't know.
As I understand it, there are 12 slots: 6 front-court, 4 guard, 2 wildcard (can be either). Where this might help is if someone like, say Lillard, were to edge Gordon or Rudy out on a wildcard spot. Because CP3 is now out, Lillard would get pushed into the fourth guard-specific slot, leaving open the wildcard position previously occupied. So yea, CP3 being out could in that way create space for Gordon/Rudy, if they were going to be edged out by a guard in a wildcard slot.
