Jazz, George Hill taking contract talks down to wire

Sign Hill and Gordon is virtually 100% certain to re-sign. Let Hill dangle and Gordon may waffle. One of the two had to commit first. Hill was willing to do so.

If Utah trots out Dante/Neto as the PG duo next year, Jazz are fighting for the 8th seed. Does Hayward want that? If I were Gordon and DL had the chance to extend a good friend, ensuring the team would be fighting for a top seed, then didn't, I'd go to Boston.

Call me overly dramatic, but I DL just put at risk a franchise player. Won't be one bit surprised to see Hill in SA, Gordon in Boston and the Jazz stuck in the worst possible situation: not bad enough to get a top lottery pick and not good enough to compete.

Well, if Gordon is worth Max money then he should at least be able to take this team to a top seed by his skill set. If he doesn't have the next level ability in him it would be better to try to get the Boston pick to bring in a real star to pair with Gobert.

lol @ ppl who thought he would take a serious hometown discount. There goes that theory.

This is likely his last BIG contract, especially with the TV money again this year. Foolish to think he'd settle for less than max.

LOL...

Damn it we wasted last year's lotto pick.

I said that last summer when we made the trade. And I love Hill as a player too. But I did not like the deal from a long-term cap standpoint. It seemed like a lose-lose scenario. Either he ends up walking and we gave up a lottery pick for a one year rental or we are paying him a huge amount of money at the same time we pay Hayward the max and our cap situation is in deep trouble before our team is built to be consistent championship contenders. I'm nervous paying him 20-25 million per.

I agree. Now entirely likely that Hill bolts to the Spurs this off season. That also makes things tougher when it comes to Hayward.
I don't think the Spurs have been the type to overpay guys. They usually find gems for cheaper and coach them up.
Aldridge and Leonard already make bank

I could see then rolling with parker Aves mills or getting a guy like Collison or livingston.

I'm not surprised that he turned it down. At his age, you have to maximize your earning potential. I'm not sure that he'll end up getting more than the (essentially) 3 year $88 million that the Jazz likely offered. Think that chasing the 4th year might end up costing him money. Hopefully it doesn't cost the Jazz their starting PG.

Well that's really not an option at this point.

I'd do 4/80... 4/120 is crazy... he likely gets 4/100 and I'd be scared if I was the Jazz.

I'm also not a big believer in Exum... has shown some stuff lately but against top level guys he still looks scared and that is who I am hoping we can compete against.

Then why did we trade for him? We wasted that lotto pick for what? A 1 year rental?

Even if he walks we have learned how good the team can be with a high quality player at the PG position. The lotto pick last year is not worth what a lotto pick has traditionally been worth. If Prince was in this draft where would he go? Can do the exercise with other similar prospects in that range.

So we traded for Hill just to learn how good our team can be with a quality PG? Really?

In terms of the pick, we could have had Dejounte Murray which Spurs got and he looks like a good one. We could have gotten Brodan. We could have even traded out and get a good pick this year instead which is LOADED iwht talent.

First two sure... but also could have gotten a pick and drafted them later... second one no... people were always high on this year's draft and hated last year's draft.

Murray has proven nothing... if he wasn't a Spur we wouldn't talk about him imo. Could have bought a second rounder and taken Brogdon.

well look at what was done with that lotto pick, first off. Taurean Prince hasn't exactly taken the league by storm.

That trade was to show Hayward that we're gunning for a championship, and that Hill would be a long-term option as PG-insurance in case Exum was falling behind in his development (which he is).

It won't be a waste if he's gone-- the one year rental made Hayward an all-star, maybe an All-NBA player, and therefore potentially capable of having us giving him the mega-max. I'd take that, and a chance at signing him, over drafting Taurean Prince any day.

I've just always laughed at posters thinking us re-signing him was in the bag. If he really is gonna take a massive paycut to be on a winning team, he's going to the Spurs. We will have to match market value, or at *least* outbid the Spurs to keep him (and they have lots of cap space for him).

and the question becomes, if he's really exploding in value on the market, why not go after Jrue Holiday? Who's younger, a good shooter, a good defender, and versatile at PG or SG just like George? As for health he's been more reliable than George Hill has

In what world has Jrue been more reliable health-wise?

Even if Hayward makes the all-nba team he won't be eligible as a designated player this offseason. He hasn't been in the league long enough. He would have to play another year at 16 million. He's not going to do that. A fifth year is the only contract advantage that we have.

Sucks these talks broke down, but I had fully accepted the fact that they'd broke down many weeks ago, so sall good.

He has long term injury issues... hill has just been unlucky.

He'd be a secondary target but with Haywards cap hold I'm not sure we have enough space without renouncing someone... Ingles Hayward.

Here is what I think happened... Hill is switching agents or has considered it according to Locke.. hill went to Utah for best offer maybe under a consulting agreement with an agent... agent may have convinced him he'd get way better.

The way it went down is kind of odd... the way it was worded "he was advised" was a little weird too... prolly reading too much into a tweet but I would think they'd say his agent thinks he can get more... not he was advised.

Why do people keep saying Taurean Prince?

That's the guy Atlanta wanted. Had we kept the pick, we would have certainly picked a different player. We could have even traded out of the 2016 draft and into the 2017 draft. (and got another Vet PG in FA instead of Hill)
