What's new

Exum

In his first year I was wonder where the hell his ability to get to the basket was. This year I'm wondering where the hell is his ability to finish around the basket.

I really believe he'll fix that part of his game next year. If he does, he can be a very good player in this league.

I'm not even sure its confidence tbh, he gets it, his body language after making a turnover is great, he hustles his *** off with no hesitation..

Not exactly sure what it is. His tools don't exactly make him unpredictable to defense, but I think its more like a muscle memory thing, he needs reps.. That'll be part of the sell if some team is gonna overpay him. 30mpg guaranteed.

Shooting is just one of those things, even world-class blackjack card counters can still lose over long periods of time(years) due to the luck of the draw. Even Steph Curry goes cold sometimes and I'm sure it gets in his head...

There was a recent story with Kyrie going onto the spurs floor after the game to get 3pt shots up, after they got smashed and shot like ****. sounds like an excuse so internet experts don't like to hear it but sometimes u just gotta get the bad ones out of your system. Thats why I say Exum best-case can shoot 40%.. Look at how George Hill is preserving his hot early season %'s.....

The low volume thing is a very explosive element. u really see it watching college ball..

He's only 21, he's still a kid, he should really be looking at entering his rookie year next year by the standards of yesteryear. I think he'll have a great year next year, I also reckon he'll stay at the Jazz, I think that's a smart move for him. If the 76ers could afford him they might make a run at him, Simmons and Brown being there.

Assuming the Jazz pony up and keep Ingles, we can now only keep one of Hood or Exum long term. Who do you extend for 4/80? Exum or Hood????

They'd have to keep Exum, otherwise how can Joe list him as a dependent for tax purposes?

4yrs / $80,000,000

Barring an amazing leap in performance, there is no way the Jazz burn ~20% of their cap on Dante. Without huge jumps in cap like last year, teams will be much more prudent in spending. And I'm a huge Dante homer.

I think you may be mistaking the recent contracts when teams have money to burn, with the long-term steady state contracts once the cap stabilizes.

The Jazz will have a huge advantage here, having not signed multiyear megacontracts with mediocre players.

Exum barely belongs in the league, guys. He is only very tall for his position and somewhat athletic (as in "quick but not explosive"), but has no discernible offensive skills. Right now, he would not be a star even in the Development League. By the way, he would not be a star if he went to college either. He is still very much a long-term project. To spend 10 m/y on him is completely nuts.

A three-year deal, at 5 m/y seems more than fine IMO. If, at the end of the three-year deal, he has showed the ability to be at least a decent starter, then the FO can throw some money at him.

So confused by the X
Such a conundrum

One minute I think total scrub bust. The his age combined with flashes sucks me in with optimism and I think we might have something. Then he really sucks again.

I'm still sticking with what I always thought.
Ceiling: decent to good starter
Likely scenario: long career as a rotational player. (Kinda like DeShawn Stevenson)
Worst case. Total bust

Hard to argue with this. The FO might feel this way too - justifiably really.

Just think X will get a second contract from someone (anyone) on the hope that he can blossom. So 5 mill prob won't get it done. Something closer to 10 might though.

Conundrum, as Fish calls it....

I would go 4 years 50 million for the X man right now

Actually Exum alternates good and bad moments. I will not say that he is a bust or a future star. I think there's a lot of potential but he has to improve quickly during the interseason to deserve a contract.

Definitely not confused. His up and down play is that of a yung guy. He's consistent with being inconsistent and he looks like he's over-thinking everything at times and that the game is too fast for him.

I'm not worried about the kid until I am.

It's not that surprising that Exum seems to play inconsistently. A couple major reasons for this:

1. His role is very inconsistent. Not only playing time, but also what he is asked to do out there. His role is not conducive to putting up consistent stats right now, as he is an afterthought offensively.
2. He is coming back from an injury. Sure, he's been back to about his normal physical self since January, and he's been much better since then. Much more consistent, much more effective, way better defensively.
3. He's young, and hasn't had a full offseason at 100% health to work on his game since being a pro. This is huge. He's either been recovering from injury, or playing with his national team. This will be his first chance at actually adding significant things to his game over an offseason.

He's shown enough flashes that I would have no problem extending him assuming that I know he'll continue to work hard at his weaknesses, and there is no hidden injury issue. The only wild card would be if Quin Snyder doesn't believe in him long-term. He clearly doesn't trust him right now to be a PG, so if that isn't going to change then you either have to change Quin's perception, or it might not be worth it to keep Dante. Dante has been pulled out of games a lot this season for single mistakes, and it has definitely seemed to impact his ability to play freely. It's hard to say how much this has affected him, but it is still happening. As recently as 2 games ago he was yanked for a single TO, hit a three before being pulled out, and then his replacement proceeded to come in and make almost the exact same type of mistake without being pulled. Dante is a smart guy and I'm sure he can see the discrepancies in how he is being treated. the FO and Snyder need to get on the same page and be more consistent about how they distribute minutes next season. This needs to be Dante's last "whipping boy" season.
