2016-17 NBA PLAYOFFS THREAD

Well, top 10-15, whatever. I still don't think 'Danny Green' is top 15 defender in the league. Sorry.

Then you're not watching a whole lot of NBA the right way.

You can do the same highlight videos for all 30 players I named in the above post. Just saying.

Look at his decision making, how he reognizes when he can't recover and immediately shifts his attention to the diving big and tries to incercept low drop offs/bounce passes, relying on the switched big to take away lobs. How he uses his body without fouling to slightly alter driving lanes and funnel them into ground bound bigs. How he can contest from behind without reaching in.
Just take the awareness part on PnR coverage, where he makes it really easy for the big to only focus on denying the score because his awareness when it's time to switch is super rare. It makes all the difference. In real time when things are moving around fast in the lane, that's super hard to nail as often as he does it.

elite
eɪˈliːt,ɪˈliːt/Submit
noun
1.
a select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.

I've just listed a group of 30 players who I would take as elite defenders, sorry Danny Green is not part of that group. We can make that group bigger, like 50 or 100 players, but then that group is no longer 'elite' IMO.

Also I did that list in like 2 minutes. I've left out guys like:

Andre Roberson
Klay Thompson
KCP
Otto Porter
Embiid
Batum
Steven Adams
Whiteside (should have been in the 1st group of 30 actually)

I guess I would put Danny Green here too... in this 'fringe' elite group I guess.

Why dont we just let Ingles walk and get Korver for less amount of money.

Weird that the spurs don't play their elite defender more minutes. Pop is a dumbass I guess

He is playing 26 minutes. What else do you want? He also has been starting for five straight years except 3 or 4 games.

The fallacy of your argument is that it's only an opinion, while I can underline my arguments with examples and explain why they are valid. Have fun having discussions revolving around the principle of authority. They'll be as superficial as Trump's propaganda.

Name some more elite defenders for me and see how many minutes they play. Just seems kind of low to me.

I know lowry and draymond were mentioned in this thread. Kahwi is thought of as an elite defender too.
Looks like lowry plays 37.4 minutes per game, kahwi plays 33.4, and draymond plays 32.5 despite the fact that the warriors have tons of blowouts when he is certainly sitting on the bench most of the 4th quarter. Gobert 33.9 minutes per game.

Maybe I'm wrong and green is an elite defender even if the defensive stats that someone posted earlier don't seem to indicate that to be the case. Still, shoots horribly from the field, not all that good from 3, doesn't make plays, doesn't rebound, never gets to the line. Like I said before, his contact isn't bad (around 10 million per year) and he isn't really old (29 years, though he seems to be declining at that age already since his last two years are two of his worst) but I don't really like players who only provide 26 minutes of defense and not much else at all.
Agree to disagree I guess.

Btw, so far in these playoffs he is averaging 7 points per game on 42% from the field (much better than his regular season 39%) and 33% from three (down from his 37% regular season), getting to the line less than 1 time per game and only 50% from the line in playoffs (4-8), 3 rebounds and 1 assist. And I think he is already playing in the best system for him with a pretty good coach (greatest of all time imo). I would expect him to be bit worse with the Jazz maybe.

Again, to be elite is to be in a group.

Kawhi, LeBron, Draymond, Gobert, Davis, Butler, PG13, etc.. these guys without question belongs to the 'Elite Defender' group. How can someone say with a straight face that 'Danny Green' also belongs to that same group?

Would lowry and cp3 be in that group? (I don't know and I'm just curious what you think)

And like I said, let's just say that danny green is an elite defender (I don't think he is). I still don't want an elite defender for 26 minutes that does nothing else for you who seems to be getting worse as he gets older who already plays in the perfect system for him for possibly the greatest coach of all time. And even if he is an elite defender I would think he is more the type that only defends one guy at a time rather than effects the whole teams offense like a draymond or gobert.

I think CP3 would definitely be in that group yes. I honestly haven't watched enough of Lowry to know. I think he is very good and physical but CP3 is so pesky.. he has been averaging 2 steals a game for years now iirc .. and to me that's elite.

Green has never made an all nba defensive 1st team or 2nd team in his career fwiw.

Danny G is an elite defender (for his position at least, if we only wanted the best defenders in the NBA we'd have basically only big men).

Guards who are better defensively than Green: CP3 and Tony Allen, and Beverley has a case. Nobody else.

It's weird that he doesn't make any all nba defensive teams and defensive advanced stats/metrics aren't at the top of the league.

I'm not gonna debate who's elite and who's not but Pop doesn't strike me as the type to play a guy that doesn't play D.
