2016-17 NBA PLAYOFFS THREAD

I'm not gonna debate who's elite and who's not but Pop doesn't strike me as the type to play a guy that doesn't play D.
He definitely plays D. We are all in agreement on that.

I've just listed a group of 30 players who I would take as elite defenders, sorry Danny Green is not part of that group. We can make that group bigger, like 50 or 100 players, but then that group is no longer 'elite' IMO.

but that's your definition of elite. There are many guys I would take off your list and put Danny G instead

Matthews (maybe 4 years ago?)
Wiggins
Pj Tucker
Favors (not this year unfortunately)
Winslow
Whiteside
Batum
Porter

But point taken, he may not be elite but he is a very very good defender who can guard multiple positions

At the end of the day there is a lot of subjectivity with some statistics to back it up (not as great for defense as for offense)

we really disagree on this one

yeah, he can't create his own shot but he has high IQ and a good defender. Good 3 point shooter with a quick release. Great as a complimentary player
I agree with this though on the jazz ingles, JJ, and hill are all quite a bit better 3 point shooters % wise and Hayward is better as well and hood is about the same.

Basically what I should have said instead of saying he sucks is that I wouldn't want him on the jazz with our current roster unless he was ok being the 5th wing competing with exum and burks for scraps.
Ingles is younger, cheaper, better passer, better shooter, and a very good defender (though green must be better at defense after reading all these posts) and great glue chemistry guy. I don't want green taking ingles minutes.
Hayward is miles better. Don't want him taking his minutes.
JJ is more versatile offensively, is a better playmaker, a better shooter, a better rebounder, more clutch and has almost single handedly won a bunch of games for us this year. Don't want green taking joe Jesus minutes.
Hood is younger, cheaper, about the same good shooter (though I think he will be better very soon), more versatile offensively, gets to the line more (everyone gets to the line more than green), and is a better handler. I would like the jazz to keep developing hood. He is only 24 and in his third season. Don't want green taking his minutes.

Then you have exum spending some time at the wing and I don't really want him to lose the few minutes he gets. I feel it's important to develop him with a little bit of court time at least.

Then you have burks who I adore.

I would pass on green. We got plenty of good wings imo.

It's weird that he doesn't make any all nba defensive teams and defensive advanced stats/metrics aren't at the top of the league.

He's been top 2 with the Grindfather for SG defensive impact(+/-, drapm, drpm type stats) over the last 5 years or so.

Hill (toe) is questionable for Saturday's Game 3 against the Warriors, Marc J. Spears of ESPN reports.
Hill, who missed Game 2 due to soreness in his left big toe, is questionable for Game 3. Shelvin Mack drew the start in Hill's place and would likely do so again if Hill remains sidelined. Dante Exum and Raul Neto would also probably see additional run off the bench once more. More information about Hill's status should come after Saturday morning's shootaround.

It's too bad if he misses another one.

Currently no, but he's a six time all-star.
Pop played him a lot of minutes this season. When he averaged 10ppg, PER of 13 and had a TS% of 51%. One of the worst starting PGs in the league. Sometimes it's just best to admit you're wrong

The Spurs' defense may not be as elite as in years past, but it's still better than the Rockets. That's probably why the Spurs will pull out this series.

Probably the same reason a lot of coaches play vets. You know, because they're vets.

Yeah but he did have a huge game 6 against Memphis. He was really turning it on in the playoffs and dialing it back to the old Parker.

He played like garbage in some playoffs games too. I'm pretty sure he can no longer sustainably turn it on any more.

He had 1 bad game, game 3 of the Grizzlies series. It's hardly accurate to say the Spurs are better without him and having Dejounte Murray start in his place. He had been really good this playoffs up to this point, at least relative to how he performed in the regular season. He had certainly been "turning it on" to some extent.

That's fair.

LOL .. who was it that took PJ Tucker off my top 30 defenders?

Have you seen how he's guarding LeBron this game?!?!
