Zach Lowe: Paul George would love to play with Gordon Hayward

It's only 3 if love sucks or is hurt... ifnot he opts out may get less per year but will surely lock in a longer deal.

Stitches is correctly reading tea leaves... no crystal ball needed.

Probably right, but we dont know what the FA market will be 2 years from now.

Well he has literally said he is going to LA in 2018.

The way I read it was he was leaving and preferred LA... DeRozan was supposedly headed there too... but then they were winning and LA was a dumpster fire.

You realize if the Jazz add Love or George they are still an underdog to the Warriors, right?

And you do realize that I said that in my posts, right? over and over and over again.

So, we meet up with GS in the WCF's. We push them to 6 games, maybe 7.

you are a sprained ankle away from a trip to the finals.

With Gobert, Hayward and George, Utah can have an outside shot at GS.

PG gives Utah a shot at pushing GS.

Paul George wants to be the man and wants to be in LA. He must know of other FAs that want to move to LA--maybe Westbrook, maybe even Lebron.

So without better info it is more accurate to call it a two year deal. I think there is an80% chance he opts out... and if he doesn't it's because he's gone gimpy and we'd wished he opted out. That third year is a disadvantage.

Yes but you'd be closer and it helps us retain Hayward. If we added Lebron we might still be an underdog. We need to build the best team we can and hope we are on the good side of injury luck... sucks but that's where we are.

I dont think it helps us retain Hayward, at least not long-term. If I'm Hayward and we get George then I'm signing a 1+1. If George leaves, then I'm probably out the door too as my team just blew assets to get a 1 year rental.

Also, every report out there says that George would "like" to be in LA. Who wouldn't? Every soul on earth would like to be in LA and if they say otherwise, they are lying.

LA is freaking amazing. Who wouldn't want to live there?

Yet, not everyone lives there. Why? Because, sometimes situations are such that there are better options for you than LA.

Let's do that to George. Let's give him an offer he can't refuse. Bring him here, make him the Alpha of this team and an All NBA Player, and a 60+ win team that pushed GS for the first time years.

Make him walk away from that. Not a lot of people would.

If he walks, fine, we are in the same spot we are in now, and had an amazing year in the process.

BUT, if he stays...hot damn. We are a sprained ankle or a Thompson to NY away from a legit shot at a title.

Worth it.

You know you dont jump blind into these things right? You can request permission to talk with the player and his agent to see if they would have any interest under any scenario to sign long-term with the team. If he flat out says no to Utah, then you dont trade for him.

If he says "Yeah, I would sign in Utah if we proved we can compete with GSW" then yeah, you try and get a trade done. I doubt PG is giving that kind of assurance to anyone though, even one as vague as that.

Trading away a ton of assets for one year of Paul George is the type of short-sighted thinking that landed the Brooklyn Nets in the mess they're currently in.

If he flat out said no to an extension I'd still trade for him. Get him here. That's battle #1.

Utah is a weird place with a lot of bad info out there on what it's like here. Getting him here is the hardest hurdle to overcome.

Get him here, have a great season and see what happens.

That's much better than accepting your fate as another 3-5 place West team.

We have extra assets beyond our normal picks.

Brooklyn did not.

DL is also much smarter than King.
