Zach Lowe: Paul George would love to play with Gordon Hayward

Let's say Utah has two options: 1 is get Love for two years (maybe three) or 2 is get PG for one year, maybe more.

Love gets Utah to a top 3-4, maybe 2 team in the West. Not bad. But, we will be destroyed by GS. The matchups sucks too much.

PG helps Utah matchup. If you get Hill back and/or Exum gets his defense back, look at the matchups:

Steph vs Hill
Durrant vs Hayward
Thompson vs George
Green vs Gobert

We could shut down Green and possibly Thompson. Then it boils down to Hayward and George vs Durrant and Curry. Now, Durrant and Curry are better, but we'd be the second best team in the West.

So, we meet up with GS in the WCF's. We push them to 6 games, maybe 7.

We can pay George more than anyone. We'd be the clear #2 in the West, maybe the NBA. PLUS, GS would be on the verge of losing Thompson.

If you are George, you can stay with Utah, make more money, have more wins, play with Gobert (who doesn't steal your shots) and Hayward, and you are a sprained ankle away from a trip to the finals. Oh, and you are only 90 mins away from LA.

OR

You go to LA, and be in the same situation as Indy, but in LA (which is better).

I'd take that risk if I was Utah. Winning does things to people. Go win.

You'd like it for taht year, but then would be pissed when Hayward and George leave the next year and the Jazz blew future picks to get George.
You're right, that would really suck.

But it would be the best opportunity to get a ring outside of Stockton/Malone.

Can't say the same thing with Love.

It's worth it, IMO.

You're killing it tonight. Keep it up.

I loved the Deron years. That is what Love would give us. Like you, I want more. Even if for one year.

And guess what? If Hayward and George leave, then you are in the same spot as right now, you can either try to build around Gobert or blow it up and start over.

But, at least we would have had one great year. That is what I want.

It's only 3 if love sucks or is hurt... ifnot he opts out may get less per year but will surely lock in a longer deal.

Stitches is correctly reading tea leaves... no crystal ball needed.

You realize if the Jazz add Love or George they are still an underdog to the Warriors, right?

And you do realize that I said that in my posts, right? over and over and over again.

With Gobert, Hayward and George, Utah can have an outside shot at GS.

PG gives Utah a shot at pushing GS.

Paul George wants to be the man and wants to be in LA. He must know of other FAs that want to move to LA--maybe Westbrook, maybe even Lebron.

Probably right, but we dont know what the FA market will be 2 years from now.

So without better info it is more accurate to call it a two year deal. I think there is an80% chance he opts out... and if he doesn't it's because he's gone gimpy and we'd wished he opted out. That third year is a disadvantage.

Yes but you'd be closer and it helps us retain Hayward. If we added Lebron we might still be an underdog. We need to build the best team we can and hope we are on the good side of injury luck... sucks but that's where we are.

I dont think it helps us retain Hayward, at least not long-term. If I'm Hayward and we get George then I'm signing a 1+1. If George leaves, then I'm probably out the door too as my team just blew assets to get a 1 year rental.

Also, every report out there says that George would "like" to be in LA. Who wouldn't? Every soul on earth would like to be in LA and if they say otherwise, they are lying.

LA is freaking amazing. Who wouldn't want to live there?

Yet, not everyone lives there. Why? Because, sometimes situations are such that there are better options for you than LA.

Let's do that to George. Let's give him an offer he can't refuse. Bring him here, make him the Alpha of this team and an All NBA Player, and a 60+ win team that pushed GS for the first time years.

Make him walk away from that. Not a lot of people would.

If he walks, fine, we are in the same spot we are in now, and had an amazing year in the process.

BUT, if he stays...hot damn. We are a sprained ankle or a Thompson to NY away from a legit shot at a title.

Worth it.

You know you dont jump blind into these things right? You can request permission to talk with the player and his agent to see if they would have any interest under any scenario to sign long-term with the team. If he flat out says no to Utah, then you dont trade for him.

If he says "Yeah, I would sign in Utah if we proved we can compete with GSW" then yeah, you try and get a trade done. I doubt PG is giving that kind of assurance to anyone though, even one as vague as that.

Trading away a ton of assets for one year of Paul George is the type of short-sighted thinking that landed the Brooklyn Nets in the mess they're currently in.

If he flat out said no to an extension I'd still trade for him. Get him here. That's battle #1.

Utah is a weird place with a lot of bad info out there on what it's like here. Getting him here is the hardest hurdle to overcome.

Get him here, have a great season and see what happens.

That's much better than accepting your fate as another 3-5 place West team.

We have extra assets beyond our normal picks.

Brooklyn did not.

DL is also much smarter than King.
