What's new

The Jazz have acquired the 13th pick and select Donovan Mitchell

Trey can shoot.

When he isn't thinking, he can shoot.

I hope he finds a nice home this offseason.

When you catch the ball do you hop before you catch the ball or step into the ball to shoot. It's how you create your rhythm to shoot the ball off catch and shoots.

My friend got called for travel in mens league for the hop... we were all so confused.

Ya'll wanna hear something cool? I sent an email on Wednesday 21 to my Dad. We always like to throw out who we would draft and what we would like to see happen right before the draft and then compare notes after. This is my quote from the email:

"My favorite reasonable pick up...

Donavan Mitchell (PIPE DREAM - requires a trade. It worked for the Spurs w/ Kawhi)."

This is the guy I wanted based on defense, length, athleticism, and attitude. I think that he brings something unique to the Jazz that we don't have... a potential point guard or shooting guard stopper in a league dominated by point guards and shooting guards. In an era of so called 'positionless basketball', 'D' Mitchell has the athleticism, length, and focus to shut down opposing team's best playmakers and scorers. He is more than capable on the other side of the court. The combo means that we have a player that can potentially frustrate Klay Thompson, stick with Chris Paul, and force Westbrook into taking 53 shots to get 46 points. It isn't going to happen in year 1. But I think he is going to compare similarly to Marcus Smart on defense... just with a WAY better attitude. He believes in the Jazz and will make a bigger difference than anyone we could have drafted at 24, 28, 30, 42, or 55.

The fact that we gave up Trey in the process just made me giggle for days. Actually that giggling will probably last for years a la Gobert pickup.

My first choice as well. I thought it wouldn't happen when he kept climbing draft boards after combine and workouts. Glad we got him !!!!!!!!!

Maybe I am missing it but the catch and shoots I see in that instagram video he steps in to them he does not jump into them. 1-2 step should be catch and step lead foot then trail foot then shoot. Jump land should be landing with both feet in position to shoot, allowing a player to shoot or step with either foot in either direction. But sports specific skills are out of my wheelhouse, so I might be wrong in the terminology. That is how the training refers to it in plyometrics.

The only 2 I see are towards then end in the corner. Most of them he catches and takes one dribble then shoots.

I do wish someone would get these young players to land properly and not have the toes that inverted which leads to the knees having a valgus and injuries. Although I am guessing most of these guys it is partially due to be trained that way/looking cool but more likely having a weak posterior chain, particularly gluteus medius.

So the 1-2 step is in a different order most of the time, it's trail foot, then lead foot, since your momentum shifts into the direction of the lead foot and you need the flexibility of the lead foot to a) align yourself towards the basket(body rotation) and b) keep the balance since you need to decelerate.

Compare Gordon's shielded 3s, he does exactly what I described. Compare that to the typical James Harden getting fouled on a 3 position, where he quite often inverses the pattern, by using a screen on the left side to attack the middle with the right hand, then he stops once coming off the screen and his foot pattern is left(lead foot) right(trail foot), while denying the defender go follow him over the screen. He brings the ball over to his left shooting hand and boom, defender crashes into him. It's quite hard actually since he needs to align his left foot properly first and can't really adjust direction with the trail foot, as the lead foot is the pivot here.

Do you mean the 2nd highlighted line as in landing on the hop or after it? Or in general?

This draft took a surprising turn.

All i knew is that I hoped we added some fire power, some nasty, some energy. I was thinking it would come from a Semi Ojeleye, or Jordan Bell, but there is no doubt
we got the better player.

Since this is a guard driven league having a good to great defender will be a huge asset. Adding Mitchell with Gobert is a dream come true. Here comes the boom bitches.

Donovan Mitchell vs Dennis Smith Jr(held him to 8 pts on 3/12 shooting and 5 turnovers):

He also held Malik Monk to 6/17 shooting in their meeting vs Kentucky.

Wait for the end on this one.

Not that I've seen. They switch some though.

I seem to remember them playing at least a match-up zone against the big boys. They had a lot of long defenders too.

Not trying to make a point at all. Just something to consider when looking at opposing guards shooting numbers.

Quite possible they play some mix. Thanks for pointing it out.

The fun begins at 3:24 - more of a complete game by Mitchell (highlight-wise) than the Syracuse game:

I can't watch the video but doesn't Louisville play zone a lot?

Yes, they did in this game, though Mitchell played him one-on-one at times as well. I posted the video of the full-game on this thread several pages ago, though no one seemed to noticed. I'll try it again here.

First five minutes is great for getting way over-hyped about Mitchell. Very good game overall, as well.

There is some Lillard offensively in this kid. There is potential for him to develop as a scoring option.
