What's new

The Jazz have acquired the 13th pick and select Donovan Mitchell

Can he finish with his left?

I have seen him in scenarios where it would be advantageous to finish with the left hand yet he lays it up with his right instead.

From what I saw on the DX Highlights and Weaknesses videos finishing with either hand inside of 4-ft has room for improvement. But that was part of the reason the jazz loved him at 13, they thought he still had room to develop.

? There are only two catch and shoots (both from the corner) and he hops on both.

I was left with the impression that he 1-2s while watching him play(not this video specifically). Maybe I was wrong on this one. Have to watch more and will report back.

Oh, I thought you were just talking about the video posted. IDK on the rest.

so...where can I learn more about this 1-2 vs hop thing you speak of?

When you catch the ball do you hop before you catch the ball or step into the ball to shoot. It's how you create your rhythm to shoot the ball off catch and shoots.

And I think the 1-2 refers to the slight dip and then the shot. But I could be wrong about that.

No, it's in reference to stepping into the shot off teh catch. As the ball comes to you, you step up with your weak foot then when you catch you step into the shot with your lead foot.

thanks, I assume gathering yourself before the ball gets there makes your shot less likely to be blocked.

I think I have heard the jazz commentators mention Quin making this a point of emphasis, if I recall it was about Rodney Hood, and possibly Joe Ingles.

Edit: More impactful-the hop gives the player both feet as pivot options. Much harder to defend.

He did the hop...

Actually there are only two catch and shoot shots in that video and he only did the hop.

Maybe I am missing it but the catch and shoots I see in that instagram video he steps in to them he does not jump into them. 1-2 step should be catch and step lead foot then trail foot then shoot. Jump land should be landing with both feet in position to shoot, allowing a player to shoot or step with either foot in either direction. But sports specific skills are out of my wheelhouse, so I might be wrong in the terminology. That is how the training refers to it in plyometrics.

The only 2 I see are towards then end in the corner. Most of them he catches and takes one dribble then shoots.

I do wish someone would get these young players to land properly and not have the toes that inverted which leads to the knees having a valgus and injuries. Although I am guessing most of these guys it is partially due to be trained that way/looking cool but more likely having a weak posterior chain, particularly gluteus medius.

Ya'll wanna hear something cool? I sent an email on Wednesday 21 to my Dad. We always like to throw out who we would draft and what we would like to see happen right before the draft and then compare notes after. This is my quote from the email:

"My favorite reasonable pick up...

Donavan Mitchell (PIPE DREAM - requires a trade. It worked for the Spurs w/ Kawhi)."

This is the guy I wanted based on defense, length, athleticism, and attitude. I think that he brings something unique to the Jazz that we don't have... a potential point guard or shooting guard stopper in a league dominated by point guards and shooting guards. In an era of so called 'positionless basketball', 'D' Mitchell has the athleticism, length, and focus to shut down opposing team's best playmakers and scorers. He is more than capable on the other side of the court. The combo means that we have a player that can potentially frustrate Klay Thompson, stick with Chris Paul, and force Westbrook into taking 53 shots to get 46 points. It isn't going to happen in year 1. But I think he is going to compare similarly to Marcus Smart on defense... just with a WAY better attitude. He believes in the Jazz and will make a bigger difference than anyone we could have drafted at 24, 28, 30, 42, or 55.

The fact that we gave up Trey in the process just made me giggle for days. Actually that giggling will probably last for years a la Gobert pickup.

What do you mean by inverted exactly?

I just checked a youtube highlights video of him. To me it looks like he does both, with edge towards 1-2.
