You stop at monuments honoring the Confederacy. It can and will stop there because outside of a few loons there is no equivalence between widely honored and beloved founders like Washington and Jefferson, flawed on slavery as they may have been, and traitors to their country like Lee, Jackson and Forrest.

Concerning history, there isn’t much varied opinion on Benedict Arnold or fretting about why there are no monuments to his heroism at Saratoga before he betrayed his country. He remains an important part of American culture, just through history books, and not in bronze in public parks. Twenty years from now Lee, Jackson and Forrest will have joined Arnold, nothing remotely wrong or worrisome about that.

And yes, pulling down any monument to Nathan Bedford Forrest, a founder and first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, is helpful in combating racism. Racism is not an either/or problem, it’s not wear the hood and burn the cross or don’t, but a continuum, from mild prejudicial thoughts and feelings that may never be expressed to dozens of more tangible degrees.

If confederate monuments were thousands of years old they'd certainly be off limits. Most of the confederate monuments aren't even from the era just following the civil war. They aren't even 100 years old.

And you might want to check your facts on the Pyramids, most likely not built by slaves.

Robert Lee was NOT fired. He was reassigned because ESPN was concerned about "offending idiots." Looks like in your case they failed, one idiot in particular ended up being offended anyway. Lee still has a job with ESPN.

I am still not in favor of having monuments for a movement that fought against my country on government property. Yes, we need to remember but there are better ways of doing that IMO. The public rioting and tearing them down is not the way to remove them either. You do it through your elected leaders and have them removed and placed in museums and what not.

Edit: This is an issue that I have actually changed my stance on over the last few years. I used to be opposed to removing them regardless of how it was done. But after talking the dreaded "other side" I have a better appreciation of the issue and the points of those in favor of removing them.

I believe I would draw the line where Civil War battlefield sites are concerned. The National Park Service has announced they will not be removing Confederate Monuments at the sites of Gettysburg and Antietam, for instance. Some of these Confederate monuments denote the positions held by the various units of both armies during the particular battle. Monuments like that are part of the interpretive display that allow park visitors to understand how the particular battle unfolded, etc.

I certainly agree with this. The monuments at battlefields and museums and the like should be maintained as those are proper places for historical memory. And I do not think people should take it upon themselves to remove and/or destroy any monument but it should be through proper channels.

I do think that perhaps too much focus has been on the monuments themselves and not the fact that white supremacists are feeling emboldened by our current administration to rear their ugly heads. And the fact that people in my world are feeling that they no longer have to hide their racist tendencies because it is somehow more acceptable now.
