Nikola Mirotic

Mirotic is most likely better than any player we’d draft.

Only a moron would give up Mirotic to tank for a player not as good as Mirotic.

This is a no brainer for Utah.

When you can get a 6 ft 10 player who is an above average three point shooter or a 10-15 pick, take the bird in the hand.

To take that risk, to not go after Mirotic because you “hope” you can get a player that “might” be as good...

Be smart. Odds are the draft pick won’t be as good. Mirotic is very, very good. He has borderline all star potential. His age is right. His role fits perfectly with Utah.

It’s a no brainer. It really is.
I can tell you that a very real concern is that you SPEND ASSETS to get a guy that can just walk, AFTER making the pick worse.

I'm not necessarily a tank jockey, but draft picks are serious assets, and UFAs rarely re-sign here. Almost never?

With the direction we’ve headed this season I’m not okay giving up this years first round pick. I don’t want to see Exum leave either. Mitchell is amazing, and Dante still dominated everyone in summer league. Exum is going to be a good player if he can stay healthy. I would be very upset to see Exum go anywhere. Exum will be good, he just needs to stay on the court. He’s still extremely young and very talented. If we give up a pick I would prefer it weren’t this years but I can see why you would do it as well considering DL has held on to all the Jazz first round picks going forward giving up one isn’t a huge deal but if it’s possible to do it without giving it up it’d be better for sure.

Exum likely complements our core about as much as Mirotic does. But I would value our pick over Exum because it represents 6-7 years of play for the Jazz.

Exum may have 10 more years, but they may not necessarily be with the Jazz.

Draft picks can be good -- look at Mitchell. Look at Gobert. Yes, we've hit on two dynamite draft picks -- can we consistently do that? That requires more than just good talent evaluation -- it requires some of those guys to be on the board. Historically speaking, gambling on that isn't the surest bet. I think landing Gobert and Mitchell has colored our glasses a little bit. I'm not necessarily saying trade a first rounder for him, but those worried about our pick getting worse because of him or ruining the tank is fairly myopic. In this case (if you can get him), Mirotic is a bird in the hand, the draft pick may or may not be a pigeon in the bush.

What do you prefer a stretch 4 in the draft or mirotic?

This draft does not have many stretch 4s. Porter, Bridges, not sure there are any others worth mentioning. Musa is a 3 to me even though he is tall.

I would absolutely not trade our first unless it was highly protected and would not convey until next year. They also get AB in that type of deal if it is me.

So...Mirotic can't be traded until the 15th but they could still agree on something. Might be interesting to see who, if anyone, doesn't play in some upcoming games as we get closer. If the Jazz do make a deal and Favors is included that could leave us pretty short handed temporarily.

You mean like Mirotic not playing tonight? He has a stomach bug I guess.

There is no way the Jazz should give up a first, since the Bulls have already made their intention to trade him. Jazz have a boatload of seconds and some expiring contracts. I don't want to include Exum either because his value is really low and I'd rather wait to see him play before using him in a trade.

Exum is a new breed Rubio. Except his version is constantly injured. I'll pass.

I would be more excited about the trade if the Jazz were in playoff contention but I think Mirotic can be a valuable piece on this team.

Would anyone honestly think that if next week Gobert and Mirotic we’re starting that we wouldn’t be in playoff contention? I think people forget that we’ve been missing Gobert while we suck. Now, if we roll out Gobert/Favors/Rubio then that’s a different story.

And our players leave as FA’s. Give them a reason to stay. A 10-15 lotto pick that might be getting good when Gobert/Mitchell are FA’s....not good enough.

You have Mitchell. You won’t do better than that. Build around him and Gobert. Win. Bows the time. Show FA’s you can come win here.

Sure. My plan hinges on getting other free agents. But, the history isn't there on even retaining free agents. We couldn't keep the premier white republican in Utah for Christ's sake.

The other question becomes how much you pay to keep Mirotic?

I'm on the fence. All I know is a 1st round pick is a firm no for Mirotic. Out of the question.

I wouldn’t do a first either.

Utah is at a serious crossroads. They have two franchise players and had one just walk away. Deron and Boozer didn’t want to be here.

We don’t have the ability to retain anyone.

I think the Jazz need to win and win fast. Build around Mitchell, gain momentum and pray for another miracle (after Mitchell and Gobert).

If we lose Mitchell...then pack it up.
