What's new

Sorry Jazz fans – Ben is the NBA Rookie of the Year

I agree he's a great player but if the ****y bastard ever expects to reach his vision of himself as the next Lebron James (or just the next unique generational talent) he's gonna have to get a jump shot. He is going to get exposed by the better teams, especially in the playoffs. He does not have the skillset to take over at the end of games. He's a great piece to a championship team but you can't throw him the ball when the defense clamps down and have him go to work.
He’s a first (or second lol) year player....

And putting ‘be LeBron or you aren’t good enough’ expectations on a guy is the most unfair thing imaginable. The dude looks like ****ing Magic Johnson out there (who also couldn’t shoot).

He's said/implied it himself man. He expects people to see him at that level at some point.

We aren’t talking about what he thinks he is, we are talking about what we are seeing when he plays, as basketball fans.

And anyone who doesn’t think he’s great is not even worth arguing with. And i’d say the same thing to someone who doesn’t think Mitchell is awesome.

Ok fair point on leaving out what an arrogant douche Simmons is. Would you agree people are projecting him as a superstar? Do you see his lack of a jump shot hurting him as he career progresses, leading him to not a superstar level?

Magic had a solid mid range jumper. He didnt start with it but had one mid way and on in his career. He was always a decent FT shooter and then became a good free throw shooter. He also developed a 3 point shot. I think if he played today where shooting matter even more his shot would be even better. Magic was never anywhere near as bad of a shooter as Simmons. But pretty much no rookie is.

The best hope for Simmons is Malone who didnt have a mid range and couldnt shoot a FT but developed. I am not sure there is another example of someone as bad at shooting that became okay. I certainly think Simmons can become an okay shooter if he has a good work ethic. All he needs is a serviceable shot and he will be really good. But without it I doubt he becomes an elite player in this league.

Brown has done wonders for Simmons as well stat wise

Don't quite understand this one? Ben has been pulled in at least five games where he would more likely than not picked up another triple double.

Do you mean the system 76ers runs? He doesn't take a lot of shots, so Brown obviously doesn't run iso sets for him, so can only guess you're referring to assists?

Miami did a great job yesterday, fantastic hard defense in that second quarter, exactly what Jazz needed in game one.

I'm pretty sure Sixers system creates all of those triple doubles for Simmons, since he takes the ball up the floor on every possession, and makes a play to a teammate for a shot (usually by collapsing the D then throwing it to a perimeter shooter). I'm pretty sure Fultz had a triple double doing the same thing in like 20 minutes the other day.

Saric,Illyasova, Covington and Redick have given Simmons more babby assists than you can imagine.

You guys are hilarious. If we didn’t have a rookie of the year contender you would never care so much about Simmons, doesn’t that tell you that you are probably massively biased against his performance?

We all think he's great dude, but we're discussing his game and projected career on a fanatic basketball forum in a thread dedicated to Ben Simmons started by an Aussie homer.

The system helps him get stats. He runs the offense and the ball goes through him. He is passed to more than any player in the NBA and passes more than any other player in the NBA. They run a lot of screens to get him easy passes for easy assists and he also gets to run off screens to get wide open looks when the court is well spaced. They also run a similar style to OKC where they want Simmons to get the easy rebounds so he can start the fast break faster. Most teams have the big rebound and make the outlet pass to the guard. This boosts his rebound stats a lot. Brown does run isos for him as well with the court well spaced with 4 shooters. He runs the most Isos on the team. More than Embiid. But 76ers are not an iso heavy system.

I am not talking about one game in particular where he sits before reaching some arbitrary stat number.
