Utah man defends Jazz fans against Westbrick

I mean, you’re stating the obvious oneye, if a fan goes overboard I believe he does get kicked out of the arena. What else do you think could be done, realistically? It’s sports, people get agitated, excited etc...

The discussion should really be about Westbrook and Jackson depicting Utah as being a racist place, in general. There are much worse places in the world. I’ll stand up for what I now call home, even if I’ve only been here 6 years now.

We can look at both issues without ignoring the other. If there’s a problem, address it. If there’s not and they’re just being bitter, then there’s nothing to address, but it’s something the Jazz and fans in the arena can try and address.

To be fair, the dude did stick the phone right in his face. I mean if it were a couple of feet away I get it, but man even from his own video's perspective he was almost touching Westbrook's face with the phone. I would have probably reacted the same way given the circumstances.
Dude seriously? He's at least a foot away probably more and in no way impeded his progress to the locker room.

Kobe's take on jazzfanz. Why he's a champion and Westbrook never will be.

I’ve gained a very healthy respect for Kobe over the years. I actually like Westbrook’s fire and toughness, he just needs his head out of his ***. He also needs a good coach that can reign it in a bit. Looking around the league I’d see maybe Pop (if he were younger) and Quin.

Mentalities I don’t like:
McGrady
Dwight
Carmelo
AK

We literally have the best amalgam between Donovan, Quin, and Rudy.

Rubio doesn't suck, either. . .

I saw a response tweet to a fox sports guy from a podcast that said “there’s no way Utah fans are the meanest in the NBA” Nick Van Excel replies with a tweet that said “you must have never played a playoff game there”.

I’m sorry but at some point, too many players have added to the list. Most fans are not the problem but if lots of players have complained about it, maybe instead of making excuses or avoiding it, it should be addressed to a certain extent? Now I know can excel hasn’t played a game here in a long time but I would hope Jazz fans are better than that, cause there’s no way you retain guys or get guys to play here if that’s our overall reputation and it’s also no way to treat people in general even if they are a pro athlete playing a game.

So you reach for a single example 20 years ago and see a pattern? Because of Nick Van Exel? SMH. . .

Nick Van Exel was part of two over-hyped Lakers squads that got bumped hardcore by us 1-4 in ‘97 and then swept in ‘98. Van Exel was then traded away from LA before he could ever win a ring. I’d be a lot more impressed if some guys who mowed over us spoke up... maybe Tim Duncan or Lamar Odom or Gary Payton.

Perhaps the fans behave differently in wins versus losses? I would be interested in the takes from, say, last year's Clipper's squad.

In light of WB's comments about the impropriety of Utah fans using family in their heckling, does anyone expect similar outrage about Toronto fans chanting 'Chloe' at Tristan Thompson who is his partner and the mother of his child?

To answer your question, people view Toronto as “part of the world,” much in the same way LA, SF, Chicago, or NYC are “part of the world.” Most people don’t have much to do with Utah, and it’s synonymous with Mormons, white people, and voting red.

Nobody says NYC is racist, at least not any more so than what baseline America would be. Appealing to the racial, religious, and political demographic of Utah is to imply racism by a lazy rubric of association. If one walks into NYC and is heckled by a fan with racial undertones, how easy is it to walk away thinking “there’s a racist here,” versus being heckled in the same manner in SLC and walk away thinking “they’re racists here”?

I know you weren’t talking about race, but Toronto is not seen as unique in any particular way, so it’s harder to generalize “oh then damn Torontoans [no idea if that’s the term]!”

People I know from NY are as racist as it gets. They tell me us safe, white Utahans don't know what it's like living and working around the crime infested boroughs. I hear the same from people from other states.

People living near violent AA communities get fed up with it and turn racially biased. Utah doesn't have this issue for most so we have a populace mainly who don't judge you based on where you originated from.

Living with crime prejudices aren't limited to any race and can be same race as well.

We should be trying to get the reputation of most reverent arena in the NBA, right? Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the players raved about how pleasant it was to play in Utah?

Here’s the thing, I’m sure it’s very few, which is why it shouldn’t be that hard to do what you can about. Other fans should notify security. I believe you can even text security in the arena now. There are ways to curtail it, and that is by punishing the people doing it. If it is being said other fans are hearing it said, security members close to benches or exits are likely hearing it said. Remove them, report them, ban them.
You still believe that these offensive things were being said despite the fact that even though this story has gotten so much national attention not a single witness has stepped forward to corroborate Westbrook's claims? Doesn't it seem more likely, at this point, that Westbrook was just grabbing at the most convenient excuse for his actions?

I agree that the fan was holding his camera way too close, and I can see why it made Westbrook angry under the circumstances, especially since anger is what the guy thrives on, but his claim of the terrible things being said about his kids. etc. lacks credibility.

I see that, but I’m talking more about the perception. I’d have to imagine very few people would say NYC as a whole is racist if they experienced racism there, but if someone has little experience with Utah then certainly the backdrop of popular opinion would ride high if there were an incident of racism, and reinforce the idea that Utah itself is racist.

It’s not too dissimilar to individuals who have conceptualized illegal immigrants as violent criminals, and any time an illegal immigrant commits a violent crime they feel satisfied in reinforcing their stereotypes about all of them in general.

I understood. I'm only pointing out that the perception should be reversed. Hell, many of these racist white Mormons end up marrying someone who originated from their foreign mission. Racistst right?

Yeah but it`s probably the evil white Mormon Utahn trying to weasel their way into their culture so they can eventually supress and dominate them. Clearly a psycopath racist.

The guy is a liar:

"Many of Westbrook’s teammates walk right by us. I’m naturally kind of filming them. Then Westbrook walks by. Again, I didn’t say anything to him and he simply turned and kind-of aggressively actually hit my hand that had the phone in it,”

That's a flat out lie. We all saw the video, the fan has the camera an inch or two in front of Westbrick and clearly says something to Russell. Video shows it, that jerk of a fan is making crap up.

The guy is a liar.
