Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

I kind of feel bad for Favors. He has been a good guy and finally gets to be an unrestricted free agent. And nobody has money....

It would be wise for both us and him to just bring him back on a one year deal making more than the MLE. Its more money than he would have made elsewhere but lets him be a UFA next summer.

For the Jazz sake I hope they can lock him in to 4-years, 50ish. Maybe with a player option. For his sake he should definitely take a one-year deal probably. But it'd be tough to turn down $35-$40 million guaranteed

I dont really like the idea of trying to low ball Favors either. He is an unrestricted frre agent right? If we try to go as low as what other teams can offer, that could backfire on many levels. The biggest being he could just say F U Ill take my 1 year somewhere else.

I genuinely doubt the Jazz will do that. Flying out to Atlanta to meet with him directly is actually a sign of respect on the organization's part. No calls, no "we'll see what happens with Player X", etc. Notice we didn't go ape**** and sign anyone yet? Favors IS the first priority for the Jazz. I suspect Utah is going to give him a couple of contract offers around a 4/50 to 55 range and a 1/15, play the "we love you" card because they did work to repair their relationship with him, and let him see what else is out there.

Given how much our roster has hemorrhaged the last 18 months, Utah needs to stop the bleeding if for perception alone. Assuming Utah and Favors move quickly, Utah can then exercise it's MLE on a player that actually helps the roster and will be a bargain. Don't know who, but we'll see.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but Ingles deal is an absolute steal, especially with the rising projected salary cap. Jazz signed him to a front-loaded deal so in 2020 he is at about $11 million which is only about 9.5% of the cap!

I would not sign Favors for more than 2 years unless it's for less than $10 per year. Or maybe something that declines like Ingles' deal.

I just dont believe we are winning a title with Favors as our starting PF. And I don't think we can win a title if we are paying Favors $12+ if he is coming off the bench.

A long-term deal at around $12 could be a serious asset for a player of Favors caliber.

1 Bradley, Tony $1,679,520.00
2 Crowder, Jae $7,305,825.00
3 Exum, Dante $7,000,000.00
4 Gobert, Rudy $23,491,573.00
5 Ingles, Joe $13,045,455.00
6 Mitchell, Donovan $3,111,480.00
7 O'Neale, Royce $1,378,242.00
8 Rubio, Ricky $14,975,000.00
9 0-vet-min $838,464.00
10 0-vet-min $838,464.00
11 0-vet-min $838,464.00
12 0-vet-min $838,464.00
----------------------------
$75,340,951.00

The Salary cap is $101,869,000.00, so we will be left with $26,528,049.00
You forgot grayson Allen

Gobert is a max player. Mitchell will be a max player. Rubio is a $15+ player. O'Neale will get paid eventually. Ingles still makes $11+ the next few years.

We have the money the next two years to survive a bad deal. Starting in 2020, we need to be able to keep the guys who matter. Because, at the end of the day, Favors is not probably starting for us if we become a contender. No other contender is intentionally spending $12+ for a nonstarter who lacks an elite skill. You pay a freak like Iggy. You don't for a solid big, good guy Favors.

We need the money for another major difference maker.

I think this off-season comes down to Derrick Favors or Jabari Parker.

Couldn’t we realistically get both of them with the lack of money left on the table around the NBA? I would try to snag Jabari on a short term MLE deal and see if the Bucks match, or some sort of sign and trade involving Burks and picks.

If we swap Favors for Parker, we are making a serious mistake. A very serious mistake. You absolutely don't pay huge cash for a player who is projected to be your starter that can't play a full season. So Favors any day of the week, twice on Sunday, and thrice on major national holidays. It's like with Utah resigning Exum, it's a contract for potential, not performance, which is probably the worst kind if that contract is huge. Parker might be an MLE player on this team, but Utah absolutely cannot afford to lose Favors in that case.
