What's new

So... who is going to replace Ricky?

Worse than Rubio? And at half the price? Apparently he's a good defender and his shooting looks solid the last 3 years.

No. Joseph’s TS% has been 52.0% and 50.3% the last two years. It’s 52.1% for his career. That blows.

As solid a defender as Joseph may be, we have four guys behind him who can really defend and aren’t desperate for that. What we do need is better shooting.

Cory Joseph would be excellent and he deserves an opportunity to start he's in his prime. In the event the Jazz are fortuitous enough to land Darius Garland in the draft they're still gonna want to have a vet in place as training wheels, Ricky would be suitable for this, If it was me though I'd roll the dice on Joseph. There will be many suitors for his services but Utah could offer him a bigger role than most.

Lmao.

He’s started every game for the Magic this year. Cory Joseph hasn’t started one.

The fact he is starting tells you a lot about the Magic. DJ is a decent player but no starting material, especially at this point in his career.

The Magic suck on the wings, Gordon’s been kind of meh, and he’s got them at just under .500. Probably the best they’ve been in a long time tbh. I’m not saying he’s solely why by any means. Vuc is playing awesome. But listen, as a stop gap for a year or two at the absolute most, you could do a lot worse. Dude has near elite shooting numbers and a 5:2 A:T ratio.

NAOS has always had an affinity for 3 and d guys too. Think Moute. I used to want a ton of guys like that on a team too. But the league’s evolved and shooting is wildly important and Joseph isn’t great on defense and blows as a shooter/scorer. Considering the latter is our clear deficiency, attaining Joseph makes no sense imo. I’d rather see.

Rubio-Augustin
Mitchell-Exum
Ingles-Korver
Favors-Crowder
Gobert

with Royce mixed in.

The Magic have been bad (not terribly bad) in probably the weakest EC in years. The reason for marginal improvement? Vucevic, Clifford and solid contributions from their bench (Ross). Still bad though. DJ as a backup? that's fine. Our starter for 1 or 2 years? Please no.

Even Lowe wrote this last month about DJ:

Their point guard situation is a sinkhole. No one could have seen this coming. Orlando cannot expect any more from D.J. Augustin. He's shooting 41 percent from deep and taking care of the ball; on some nights, the Augustin-Nikola Vucevic pick-and-roll is Orlando's only reliable source of offense.

But Augustin can't consistently prod beyond the foul line. He's a nice backup point guard. The Magic are asking him to be a heavy-minutes starter.
I just don't see him as starting material, just a boost to our bench

In the previous post, I put my ideal situation and roster core. Maybe we could acquire DJ for Sef’s expiring and a 2nd.

Doubtful. But maybe. And we may not even want to if Sef starts to look better and better over the next month. But this would give us more shooting (guardswise, Rubio and Exum are both super shaky here, and Mitchell isn’t efficient either) and lineup flexibility as well as insurance should Rubio get injured again.

I think a move like that could be ok. We could always welcome more playmaking/shooting. However, the Jazz may not want to add extra salary going into next year's free agency. And I hardly see the Magic making that move. They don't have any other pg on their roster.

**** the Magic. They don’t have a say in it.

But seriously, maybe they reach the point of semi-tanking, and building around Isaac-Gordon-Vuc and maybe Fournier, with more money in free agency to go after someone and a top 8 pick.

Yeah Jazz aren't bringing on somebody like Augustin that eats into cap space in 1 of the 2 summers they have remaining with Don on a rookie deal.
