2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

That's something I find curious. Jazz FO so high on Exum they won't include him on a deal, yet he doesn't start, gets back up minutes, doesn't play in crunch time, looks completely lost at times, and is frequently in the coach's doghouse. At some point, they gotta take off his leash and let him develop with confidence that he won't be yanked first mistake he makes. I mean, both FO and coach show relatively little faith in him on court, but won't start him, won't play him big minutes, but refuse to trade him.

From where I sit, either trade him or play him and see if he can reach his potential. This middle ground approach does not seem to be working.
It’s reminiscent of being told we won’t pick up DWill off waivers because we don’t want to hamper Exum’s development, then end up giving all the minutes to Shelvin Mack and then having Hill go down with an injury in the playoffs.

Stellar plan.

I'm all for sticking the metaphorical finger at the Lakers. Here's to many, many years or continued irrelevance (despite being on TNT/ESPN on a weekly basis, regardless how bad they are.)

To add insult to injury, D-Russ, the guy Lakers and Magic dumped for Lonzo, is thriving in Brooklyn, while Lonzo is a dud who will probably never be worthy of his second pick status and is fated to spend the rest of his Lakers career as trade bait.

I hate the Lakers, and I take pleasure in their suffering.

I will always upvote Laker hate.

I'm happy with no moves. I think this team can compete for the 4-7 spots and make some noise in the playoffs. I don't think Niko or Jabari is an improvement over Favors anyway, so I'm good with Derrick staying.

Its tougher to find leverage for free agents when cap-space is your only advantage and half the league has the same amount as you, with less cultural stigma. We had a little bit of specific advantage with assets of expiring Rubio and Favors, a young piece in Exum, and pick(s) for trades. We have to rely on appeal for FA since many teams have cap room, which doesnt lend me much confidence.

I agree we are more likely to get a guy like Niko at $15M than signing Tobias at the max... I think we can swing on the big pieces (and fail) and still come away with some pieces... maybe not the final pieces, but pieces that fit better and might be younger than Conley. Giving up the picks to get something done I know is a small gamble... but to me its those picks that have to turn into all-stars or really good starters to make things work for us.

God. I’m so sick of hearing “so and so screwed is and didn’t let us get to plan B”.

No, they didn’t. You just suck at being a GM.

And I'm sick of people complaining that DL didn't do anything or even tried. It takes two to tango. We didn't have many assets and you will never know what other teams asked from Utah. What if the Wiz wanted Ingles in a Porter deal? Mirotic for 4 2nd rounders? (when we can have him this offseason) And what about Tobias? (Philly overpaid a lot). Utah didn't have the required assests or just felt those players weren't good enough (like Porter). It's dissapointing not to make a move (and make a better use of our little assets) but at the end of the day we have a competent GM and playoff caliber team.

So Memphis wanted Exum for Conley and some other stuff and we said no? WTF is wrong with our FO. This love affair with Exum is stupid, like with a damn old girlfriend we just can't let it go even if she sucks( in a bad way)?

I think DL is very aware of how asset depleted Utah is currently and doesn't want to overpay unless its the finishing touch.
You have to keep stepping to the next level there’s no finishing touch if you’re not up to that last step before finishing touch. It’s like Cousin Eddie being unemployed because “he’s holding out for a management position.”

For those keeping track, Dante Exum and the cost to acquire him has been:
-Paul Millsap and DeMarre Carroll
-a #5 pick
-dozens of millions of dollars and a roster spot
-max cap space this offseason
-Mike Conley

Let’s just keep praying that this organization’s feverish obsession with sinking costs into this lemon yields anything ever.

I'd definitely be open to it, he'd be an amazing fit here. The contract is really, really bad though. $35-38M per year for 3 years.

BUT, the Jazz are in a unique situation with Mitchell in a rookie deal. Bringing in Griffin doesn’t hurt salary wise. It’s like you are paying Griffin 20 million and Mitchell 10.

How many guys have to be renounced to offer Niko $15M? Calling it now... "Niko isn't worth losing Favors AND Rubio. He just isn't."

Dem bird rights doe.

You act like the Jazz have done this for 5 years in a row.

Jazz spent so many picks trying to get PGs in the past 6 years. They have made moves, big and small.

Jazz are going for the big game in free agency.

I’m not claiming that. Let those birds ****ing fly for the love of god.

In trying to shoehorn Rubio and Favors, the Jazz have been using calculus to solve 2+2 and getting 3 as the answer. It’s not that complex, spread the ****ing floor and don’t allocate significant resources to bad fits.

The Dante project may be the worst kind of fail... Fultz was traded today... they cut bait and got a minimal return. It was a fast fail... spent big draft capital but that's okay.

We have invested so much in Dante... then used draft capital for seemingly stop gap options in Hill and Rubio while he developed. It is obviously not all his fault, but continuing to double down can prove costly. We had a great excuse to get out of the project today (maybe who knows Grizz may have asked for more) and bet again.

It better work... there is almost no way it is a profitable en-devour based on sunk costs... but from here on out he better be worth his contract at least.

If you didn’t get Porter because of Ingles, you’re nuts. Ingles is the most average player on the face of the earth.
