What's new

Jazz have been extremely aggressive in FA, re-sign Ricky Rubio and pick up Derrick Favors option

I'm trying to understand the residual saltiness here. Lindsey has made trades and acquisitions nearly every deadline and off-season since joining the Jazz, which typically has been good for the team. Most of the deals this deadline, if not all of them, don't directly impact the Jazz's standing or remaining schedule much. Sacto made some nice moves, but the Clipps and Grizz are bowing out. Simply put, it didn't actually CHANGE anything in the Western Conf itself.

Lindsey didn't overpay for a almost-allstar PG on the decline who's contract would albatross the organization for a few years. Is Conely good? Yes. Would he have made the Jazz better on the right deal? Probably, yeah. Is Memphis smoking drugs? Absolutely. Frankly, I think Exum was an overpay as far as his contract, but it wasn't bad comparatively and he could still grow. But I get the feeling Memphis wanted Exum, two 1sts, and Rubio. Frankly, that's too much for Conely.

Beyond that, most of the players previously linked to the Jazz went for deals that might just be rentals, but that doesn't pan out a lot of times and Utah will have a chance to sign one or a few of them outright without giving up picks or losing rotation players in the organization's long term plans.

Utah needs to make some plays this off-season, that's a given. But you don't trade simply for the sake of making one. I wanted Utah to make some sort of deal, but that doesn't happen sometimes. Stuff happens. Settle down folks, damn.

I don't mind that DL didn't overpay for Mike Conley. If the deal isn't right it isn't right and you don't do it.

What I'm upset about is that DL put us into a position where it is all or nothing for us in 2019 free agency. Either we get a max free agent or we likely get stuck in a repetitive loop of mediocrity. And 2019 free agency does not look like the group of names to go all in on. I don't see one big name this summer that we have better than like a 5% chance to get. If and when we strike out, we all know exactly what is going to happen. We are going to re-sign Rubio and Favors. The Jazz have a long standing history of keeping hard workers who want to be here. They get overly attached to them. Don't get me wrong, I love Rubio and Favors and this current team. It's the most fun and entertaining groups that the Jazz have ever had. But I also want the team to improve. And if we keep Rubio and Favors I don't see how that ever happens. I think we've seen the limits the group has. Keeping Rubio and Favors is also going to put us in dangerous waters come 2021 when Rudy is a free agent. The dude loves Utah but he also wants to win. How do we think he's going to feel after two, three, four straight years of similar results?

If the Conley deal wasn't the move I don't understand why DL didn't have a backup plan. We could have easily traded some expiring contracts for a pick or a player with multiple years which would have given us an asset and/or punted our flexibility down the road. We didn't have to be all in this summer.

Don’t worry. If they’re both back this summer, it will be on team-friendly deals that will become valuable assets at the deadline.

The fact that DL wanted to trade Rubio, but not Exum tells me 3 possible things.

1. DL is going to find a new PG in the off-season
2. DL is going to start Exum next year
3. DL is going to start Mitchell at PG next year

I would be shocked, barring a huge playoff success story, if Rubio is on the team next year.
Should we expect Dante to start after Allstar break? If the FO has decided to move on from Rubio why continue play him ahead of Exum?

Because Rubio is better at the moment.

I don't know about this. Exum was playing better in December for sure but it wasn't a really long sample. I wouldn't be surprised if dante was every bit as effective as Rubio in that starting lineup. It also wouldn't surprise me if Rubio was better, but I just don't think there is a big difference between the two players.

But there's no way Quin is benching Rubio. That would be the most shocking thing I've ever seen him do.

This. Rubio, Dante, neto, are pretty much similar in effectiveness. I think they should play the guy with the most potential on the longer contract.
Ain't gonna happen though

Trying to win basketball games.
Rookie season aside, Dante has never cost us games.

Judging by our trade deadline moves (or lack of) we aren't competing for a Championship so are we really opting to shelve Dantes development again to put minutes into a guy who wont be here next season?

Exum will get enough minutes, don't worry.

The Jazz are trying to win games.
