Ricky shoot around comments to media

You can trade players into cap-space in the off-season. The Jazz can do Favors for Conley straight up.

K... does Memphis want $17M of Favs... cuz you have to guarantee it to trade it. We giving them the draft rights to who we pick? We giving them a 2020 pick (people were down on the 2019 draft... don't know what 2020 looks like).

It was a lot cleaner to do it at the deadline... timing, money and such will be tougher to figure out in the offseason.

They could still cut Favors after trading for him, no? But Jazz could also just cut Favors and trade fir Conley, so the point is moot.

.

Unless you're getting Klay Thompson, you cant start next season with Mitchell at PG surrounded by a bunch of guys who are just shooters and Gobert.

You can though. I actually saw them do it.

Jazz would need to cut favs, kill our trade exceptions, remove caphold a for Ricky, and then decline Neto to do it straight into space... I’m not 100% sure that quite does it.

They can’t cut him... he doesn’t count as salary unless he’s guaranteed.

Could trade Bradley/Neto/Niang after guaranteeing. Then we are left with small exceptions to fill out roster.

Getting him at the deadline would mean we could have operated over the cap and would have MLE for other needs.

I’m fairly sure that bridge is burned... unless they just wanted to do a salary dump.

They want 17 million of Favors more than they probably wanted 30 million in expirings they would have to have taken back in a deal at the deadline.

Remember their owner plays a significant role in their negotiations.

You guys are butting heads because of terminology, I think.

We need another player who can shoot, and who has enough floor game to put serious pressure on the rim. We need both of these facets in a bucket-getter. As long as this player has the sense for when to drive-and-kick, and some basic (but evolving) sense of how to run PnR, then we’re good.

Think of Tobias Harris. Dude isn’t a great playmaker, but still checks all these boxes (just like he did before this recent breakout he’s had). He knows when to move the ball, even if he isn’t close to Ingles-level wizardry.

To me, it doesn’t matter whether this hypothetical player is a 1, 2, 3, or 4.

(I’ll add that if he’s a 3 or a 4, I’d take Rubio back at good value.... but we likely **** in that bed for the shot at 31-yr old Conley... and that doesn’t make me happy. Whatevs.)

you just described allen basically to a T. his problem has been defense (which is certainly better then where he was albeit still has a ways to go) and getting enough game reps to comfortable.

Exactly their owner is involved. They won't want to be $1 over the salary floor next year... so taking the $30 this year leaves them with zero salary next year... taking Favs $17m next year takes them well over the floor before adding in the minimum guys, 5-8M draft pick if they don't convey the pick, etc.

Their owner will want to cut costs next year. Doing the deal at this deadline was clearly the better and easier path for both sides and it isn't close. I doubt either side decides to lower/raise their asking price now... Made way more sense at the deadline. Taking Conley into space means we operate under the cap and restricts the other moves we can do.

I enjoyed the debate, does kind of feel like you guys are 90% on the same page and just talking past eachother.

We need to add a starter level player who can get 20+PPG on decent efficiency, who isn't a black hole when he gets the ball. The spectrum is long though, could be a Tobias Harris, or someone who can bring the ball up the floor. And everything in-between.

Agreed?

well...... I mean..... he has a super-duper-long way to go on defense. I've never really thought of him as a starter. Who knows, though?

he's much closer to being a passable/decent defender than he was early in the season. i've watched some other rookie guards who have been near or just as bad defensively, but they've gotten the benefit of either playing on a tanking team or being on a team with little guard/wing depth. Both situations have allowed them to play regardless of defense. in terms of starting, I realistically see him more as a 6th-7th man who can shoot and come in to get buckets. he could potentially be a starter if he plays next to a superstar/better shooting PG but not next to someone like ricky. I think he could eventually play really well alongside don with them 2 of them sharing ball-handling duties. both athletic, both can attack off the dribble, and both are threats to shoot from deep. don is better overall in PnR especially at floaters/finishing at the rim, but I think grayson is a better overall passer.
