Taking no satisfaction in being right

Those of us who didn't buy all in to the "but the schedule" explanation for poor Jazz showings are, I imagine, feeling some sense of vindication at this point given how the team has been trending recently (not that we're taking any satisfaction in it). The same problems vexing the team during its poor run of form in early season are cropping up again, when the schedule is much more favorable, producing 3 losses in recent games they probably should have won, two against non-playoff teams.

Our point (or at least mine) was not that the schedule doesn't matter, but that, notwithstanding, too many poor showings could not so easily be attributed to scheduling, and that this Jazz team has fundamental weaknesses that need to be addressed.

This last loss to OKC demonstrates in spades what is perhaps the single, most glaring weakness of this team: the lack of a secondary scorer who can take some of the scoring and possession load off of Donovan. A 'secondary scorer' in this context is someone who can be counted on reliably to generate in the range of 15-17 points a game (or higher), soaking up 20 possessions, give or take, in the process, who is capable of creating his own scoring opportunities, and who spaces the floor.

Gobert scores, but he is not a 'scorer' and depends entirely on others setting him up to score. He uses relatively few possessions. Ingles can score, but he's not a scorer, certainly not a secondary scorer. He also uses relatively few possessions. Crowder probably uses too many possessions for how hot and cold he runs. He's not reliable enough to fill this need. Korver is too old, and can't create. Favors doesn't use enough possessions, nor do we probably want him to, he doesn't space the floor, and he's not consistent enough. Rubio is far too inconsistent to want him to use nearly this many possessions on a game-to-game basis. O'Neal, is a nice role player, but nowhere near a secondary scorer. Exum...nuff said. Allen, really?

Conley would have filled this role nicely, but that didn't work out. (I maintain, if Exum was the sticking point, I'm annoyed as hell.) The FO absolutely needs to do something to get this secondary scorer in the off-season, and, frankly, if they don't, it's a huge failure and, I think, reason to strip the halo off of Lindsey and hold him accountable. To do this, moreover, it's likely they'll have to "over pay" and give up some assets, including the golden boy Exum. It won't come cheap. If he's ever the sticking point in the future preventing the FO from pulling the trigger on a deal to materially improve the team, it's inexcusable. Continuity and playing it safe aren't going to work anymore. It's time to take some risks. This team needs serious upgrading.

On another topic, I don't see the Jazz getting out of the first round this year. The ONLY two teams I think they can beat in a 7 game series are Portland and Denver. We won't get a high enough seed to face Portland, so we need to pray that the Jazz drop to 7th seed, so as to avoid Golden State and Houston (presumed #3 seed) in the first round.

I would say you are in the majority if you are saying that we really aren't all that great and we need a piece or 2 to get us to contender level. I think many of us were hoping we would turn a corner once the schedule eased up but I think not a single person in here expected us to suddenly become the GSWs.

If anyone expected us to be GSW, well, what can you say to that? My frame of reference goes back to the early season excuse making (much of it by press and pundits) attributing poor show of form to schedule difficulties. Sure, schedule matters, but the excuse making always struck me as a bit facile and overlooked structural weaknesses, while intimating that fans who were worried were misinformed, naive, or whatever adjective you care to add.

This summer is the **** or get off the pot summer for DL... can't keep beating the drum of flexibility if you never pull the trigger on a move that really capitalizes. At times I've agreed with the "now is not the time to push the chips in" thinking, but we are painting ourselves into a corner and are getting to the point where we have to do something.

here come @infection foreshadowing a panic Kevin Love trade.

There's been no real reason to go all-in while the GS juggernaut has been around, but once that breaks up the playing field is a lot more even across the board and that would be the time to make a major push. We truly need that 3rd star. Doesn't need to be a super star, but for sure an all-star caliber player which unfortunately for us I can't think of a single scenario where a player like that has left their current team and joined up with a small market team (seriously if someone can think of one let me know). We gotta find a way though

So you're saying you were butt-hurt and are now here to rub it in. Hey, that's EXACTLY what the internet is for! Go to town brother!

As has been stated before, we also need to find players that fit into Quin's system. Again and again it looks as if they are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I was at the game against OKC and watching Schroder get by Korver time after time was very troublesome. I was really surprised a change wasn't made to slow him down, but whatever coach was running he wanted Korver in there. Our offense was abysmal once the pnr was shut down. It was the first time I remember Ingles looking lost with it. We need some different pieces to create alternative options when this happens. Beating that dead horse, an additional shot creator would be huge.

I agree somewhat... you still do what you can to bring someone in if that person provides value beyond the current reign... I'm not even saying we push all in... we should have pushed some in or made additional changes around the fringes imo. The example people always throw out is Bjelica... could have been had on a good deal (I think he would have come here... don't buy that it was all about Vlade... it was all about the cash).

If we wait to go all-in we may miss the chance when the opportunity presents itself. You have to be ready when the opportunity comes, not decide to ramp up then.

Denver is so more well set both now and in the future then the Jazz are.

Exactly... the GS build was over time with a win here or there... switching out a part or two.

Maybe... but sustain one injury or have one guy stall in development or become disgruntled and it can fall apart. Minnesota was supposed to be really friggin good by now and can't even make the playoffs.

I'm not sure Denver's top guys fit as well as DM and Rudy... they do have an abundance of good young guys on cheap deals, but sometimes that stalls out and egos hurt them. See Celtics, Boston.

Which is why we should’ve gotten Conley. If we had gotten him, we may have been able to move some money around and attract Harris this summer.

We’re not acquiring legit dudes in fA without improving our roster via draft or trades first though.
