Adidas has done that kind of thing for years. I think the idea is that the midsole comes up and surrounds the foot in places where you need more lateral support and torsional rigidity in the shoe.

I think the first colorway is Mets colors, or was going to be. I'd assume next red for Louisville and than hopefully something Jazz themed.
