Gamethread: Game 1 of the 1st Round. Utah Jazz @ Houston Rockets. 7:30 MST

guys....lets face it....the rockets matchup is just rough as it gets for this team. there is a reason the jazz got smoked last year and are getting smoked again.

we match up horribly.

also

id like the league to take a look at the whole buyout bs in in the nba. how is it when a player is bought out hes taken to the best teams in the nba.load of pish if you ask me....

should be a buyout rule.
 
also, i have no hope for the jazz winning this series. the game 1 againt okc last year had me feeling a bit positive because it took PG13 total heroics to win the game sinking like 8-9 three pointers. The rockets game one feels completely different, we're over powered in every aspect of the game, rebounding, shooting, spacing, switching, you name it, they are smashing us.

It really is a massive disadvantage for teams who aren't able to lure those bought out players. The new CBA should feature something pretty easy: every team who picks up a bought out player should automatically give up a 2nd rounder to the team who bought that player out. That 2nd rounder needs to come from one of the next three drafts.

So for Faried, Houston should give a 2nd rounder to Brooklyn. For Rivers, Houston should give a 2nd rounder to Phoenix. This isn't a massive payment for services, but it's just garbage that Brooklyn had to pay Faried $13 million and Houston gets to play him in the playoffs on a minimum contract. Now if the teams took the percentage of regular season games and separated Faried's $13 million depending on how many games he was on each roster, then that's fair too. But that won't happen because Houston could only afford a player like Faried if he came at dirt cheap.
 
If you noticed, the Jazz opted not to stay in front of Harden but to play him sideways to force him to drive into double teams and it did hold down his scoring. Just that Harden is too smart for that and the Rockets were continually able to find wide open threes as a result. It also looked like they were guarding Gordon that way too ... which seems kind of strange, I thought. Sure, guarding Harden that way could minimize his scoring but why Gordon? They did face up Paul though and he does look like he has slowed up quite a bit from the CP3 of old. Tucker was the one who killed the Jazz, made 3 threes in a row that effectively put the game out of reach.

Right. I understand what Utah is doing. It's not the worst idea in the world on paper - I just don't see it working on the court. Harden is just too good a decision maker and you're leaving him with a lot of choices. Gobert is DPOY but he's not a miracle worker. And which "help the helper" defender is going to stop Capela? Ingles? Crowder? No way.

I had two main issues with the defense last night:

#1 - Capella and Faried still got too many easy baskets. If Harden destroys us with a floater, then so be it. We can't give him the lane AND give up the easy oop.

#2 - If we are going to risk wide open 3 pointers, they can't be in the corner. PJ and Gordon are deadly from the corner. If Harden drives and has to hit the corner guy who has to rotate the ball to a wide open guy on the wing, then so be it.
 
Sometimes, the best defense on great offensive teams, is having a great offense. I get that we have limitations on offense. We don’t have five all stars who can shoot from anywhere on the court. However, we can play a lot smarter and exploit Houston’s worst defenders than what we did last night.

A perfect example came in the 3rd, when Harden got his 4th foul. Instead of continuing to attack him we went away and chucked up a ton of 3s and threw the ball into the stands a few times.

Imagine what Kobe and the lakers would’ve done to Memo or Boozer if one of them had picked up a 4th foul early and Sloan had refused to take them out? I guarantee you Kobe wouldn’t have given the ball up. No way Jackson lets Sasha or Dfish Chuck up some nonsense neglecting Odom, Gasol, and Kobe with Boozer or Memo in foul trouble.

Why aren’t we involving Harden in every damn pick and roll play? Why aren’t we attacking him? If CP3 is switched onto Favors or Gobert, that’s a matchup we must go to and win. We should focus less on our defense, Harden and the refs are gonna rip us a new one no matter what we do. We should focus on attacking their offensive players who don’t want to play defense.

As you said we just don't have the firepower. Rudy is limited and they know this. So is Rubio. Add in Favors and there is absolutely nothing to fear on the outside. This makes Capella's job amazingly simple and allows CP3 to guard these guys as everyone else can switch or sag off. I agree we should've attacked Harden but that's easier said than done when all Houston had to do is clog the paint.

Dantoni is exploiting this team. I was reading somewhere where an assistant coach said they got exactly what they wanted with Rubio and Crowder being the focal points, not Donovan. While Rubio and Favors played well they just don't match up well in today's game. Crowder is a little better but at 33% from the three, teams are not afraid of him and dare him to shoot. Ingles, who I haven't mentioned, is scared of his own shadow at times.

Jazz defensive schemes sucked. They tried what Bucks did by daring Harden to drive right but where half step slow to react and constantly left shooters open. Unfortunately on offense we could not use our strength in size and constantly turned ball over. I think based on our roster and what we have it is better to let Harden go off for 50 pts but stick to everybody else and do not let Capella, Tucker, House and whatever other scrubs they have to beat you. Whatever defense we saw in game 1 was beyond pathetic.
 
andy Larsen talked about this, and I agree-- our offence looked terrible last night.

we need more ppl who can penetrate and get into the paint. we had a couple fun joe ingles derrick favors plays, but otherwise I don't think joe scored a single layup. he could not get any driving lanes. Rubio did well in the first quarter, but then he didn't have much else. they're also not respecting Ricky's three point shot.

that's why at this point i'm inclined to give Korver's minutes to Grayson Allen. He couldn't have been much worse on defence, but at least he can put the ball on the floor.
