What do you consider a "failed" offseason for the Jazz?

I would rather keep Rubio, and it isn’t particularly close.

Signing Rozier to keep Favors is the same vein as refusing to include Exum in the Conley deal. If we do this, this is the sort of asinine **** that’ll cost DL his job someday.

It seems that if the Jazz are set on keeping Favors, this is probably going to be a disappointing offseason, isn’t it? Keeping Fav means no major upgrade unless we can do it by trade (which I don’t really see how we get their either without picking up his option and including him in the trade to match salary)
 
If the front office really thinks replacing Rubio with Rozier and maybe making a couple other small tweaks is going to be enough to put us on the same level as the Rockets and Warriors then we are ****ed.

The problem you have with letting Favors go (and Rubio) is that Utah is under the cap and only has cap space plus the smaller exception to use. Very hard to just get a couple of players to replace Derrick and El Bricky AND improve the team. Obviously the Jazz do it if they can add Tobias or another FA of his caliber.

Keep Favs and the Jazz have the MLE PLUS Favs is an expiring contract at the deadline. This is also the scenario I see for keeping Rubio.

1. Lindsey strikes out on FA's who would really move the needle.
2. He keeps Derrick
3. And MAYBE even tries to re-sign Ricky to a 1+1 deal like Derrick has with the 2nd year being a team option.
4. Get a shooter with the MLE.

That way, the Jazz now have essentially 2 big expirings contracts as assets at the deadline. And they'd enter free agency in 2020 with the same ammo: able to get under the cap by $30M. Plus Lindsey could still go shopping with the full MLE.

We had tons of expiring contracts the last two seasons and weren't able to use them at either trade deadline so why would next years deadline be any different? Also, the 2020 free agency class sucks so I don't think being able to create max space would do us any good at all.

They’d enter a free agency with nobody on the market, Joe (and everyone) being a year older, and the team no better then before. They’d probably regress. That’s gonna be their pitch?

Additionally, Mitchell will be an RFA IIRC, which means if he signs an offer sheet with another team for whatever reason, that cap space no longer exists.

If Mitchell is going out and recruiting max guys, he knows some of the players here have got to go in order to make that happen. You think he’s going to be happy about all of the stagnation here deep down?

It’s now or never. The Jazz have to do something serious.
 
2020 is basically Anthony Davis and a bunch of middling bleh. I don’t see him coming here, so what’s that cap gonna buy you, a washed up/overpaid “star”?

And why are we throwing away entire seasons anyway?
 
This has to be the offseason the Jazz do anything significant since 2020 is a poor FA class with a bunch of aging vets + AD, and 2021 Mitchell's extension starts to eat away at 25 - 30% of the cap. Starting to get a bit nervous by all of the Tony Jones tweets suggesting minor tweaks to be honest.
