If he did leave it wouldn't be for long. Dude is like a yo yo.Based on potentially unreliable sources on twitter it appears they wanted to keep Zanik and this was the best way to do it.

Great simply wonderful. Do I come after your *** when we re-sign Rubio and bring back the same team bozo ? Good job
Again, players are hardly close with second banana front office staff. His relationship with Justin Zanik. Duh.
Was he ever the agent for one of these big-time players?
Why would you want Lindsey in charge of the draft?
Look what he has done in the draft:
DL draft:
2012: Kevin Murphy
2013: traded 14 and 20 picks for Trey Burke. Could of had Giannis and Gobert. Jazz bought in to the first round for Gobert.
2014: Exum, Hood
2015: Lyles (traded for Mitchell), Hanlan, Diez,
2016: traded pick to Atl for Hill.
2017: Denver offered Mitchell to Utah for Lyles and a first. Traded the pick that became Josh Hart for Bradley.
2018: Allen
Out of 13 picks he has two players. Gobert and Mitchell who are amazing players. But, if not for Sloan we wouldn’t have Gobert and if DL thought Gobert was going to be this good he would have drafted him at 14 or 20 and not traded those picks for Burke.
And Denver called us and offered us Mitchell for Lyles and DL said yes.
So his two good picks were more luck than skill.
DL does first round, KOC does the second. Problem solved. But you gotta compare his record to other GM’s in the same period - i would think his strike rate would be pretty reasonable in comparison. Every GM has misses.

Silly bozo. Lol, ded people don’t raise.Hello DL's wife congrats on your husband's promotion. I guess your adopted son Exum will get a raise too ? Too bad he will still suck
Zanik throws parties at his beach house in San Diego every year that many NBA players attend. There’s even a saying of “What happens at Zanik’s stays at Zanik’s.” He’s well connected and NBA players love him like a brother.Again, players are hardly close with second banana front office staff.
The Jazz are not running it back. Rubio won’t be on the team next season.

Let's hope not.
Exit interviews and all twitter chatter from Jazz beat writers say this is the case. I see nothing to indicate otherwise.
I agree with some of those criticisms... I think he is a good GM but people act like he walks on water. He did not properly assess nba salary cap landscape multiple times. Hayward negotiation was part of that but also not signing free agents, or offering anything meaningful, for guys the year before the cap exploded. A few of the guys we are trying to get this summer were guys that signed bargain deals (that seemed like overpays to those that didn't know the lay of the land) and we didn't do anything. What do we have to show for all the powder we saved those years? Booker, Diaw, , joe Johnson, Thabo, Jerebko, Favs on duct tape one or two year deals. I don't know that we could have signed Middleton or Harris, but we could have offered more than they accepted.
My biggest criticisms of DL are:
- The over conservative cap approach... the powder is so dry, but it does no good if you never use it. This is the big one for me.
- Selling second round picks (small quibble, but you hit on one of those picks and it changes your franchise... why not take a swing?)
- Drafting of Tony Bradley... never made sense at all. Makes less sense now... several guys around that range could have really helped. It's a late first so no big deal I guess.
- Not taking the low hanging fruit that would improve the team... we know we need a stretch four, we know we need more shooting, and yet we don't make the necessary changes. Hanging on to ill fitting pieces to get more data... when the data is conclusive enough already.
Yes. He has been on 5 teams in 7 seasons. That worries me.
Seems to be more circumstance than anything. No reports of him being a bad egg
He's a finalist for this year's NBA Community Assist Award.
What can DL as EVPoBO that he couldn’t/didn’t do as GM? I mean, he has been functioning in KOC’s capacity, which that was his title (sans the ‘executive’). I kinda view this like the really awkward Joe Rogan twitter interview where Jack Dorsey just sat there quiet while it was clear the other woman was there to be his voice while affording him a quasi-scapegoat.My take is that this is more about promoting DL. He seems like a big picture guy who wants his hand in everything. VPoBO seems like a position better suited for him and frees him up from the grind of dealing with players and agents.
I think it just frees him up from the micromanaging task that come with being a GM. He probably won't scout as much, won't deal with players 1 on 1 as much, won't deal with agents as much, etc. He can focus more on refining how the Jazz operate. What can DL as EVPoBO that he couldn’t/didn’t do as GM? Will he? That’s the most important part of being a higher up is to make personnel decisions. That would be DL relinquishing control so that he can focus on issues that are much less important. And now Zanick will have final say on personnel decisions.
