The Milwaukee situation was a weird circumstance. He was supposed to take over as GM, but ownership unexpectedly chose Jon Horst instead. According to Zach Lowe, Philly wine an dined Zanik like 10 times and really wanted to hire him. He would have been a very hot commodity this summer, and I think the Jazz were smart to keep him on board.
The Jazz are not running it back. Rubio won’t be on the team next season.
Again, players are hardly close with second banana front office staff.

Not sure. But this makes some sense to me. KOC is purely a consultant at this point, DL still gets sway (screw those who say this a demotion) and a pay raise, Zanik gets a promotion, and Utah makes some FO adjustments for a huge offseason. I'm not sure who Zanik's clients were, but he was a VP of BB Ops in Europe, an agent for 10 years, got some run with the Jazz as a Ast. GM, did the same with Milwaukee, then came back. Dude was going to get a GM job somewhere (got run for the Wizards, Sixers, Cavs, and Bucks GM positions), so this solves a few problems at once.
I also see this as the Jazz prepping for genuinely retooling the roster this off season with some specific targets in mind. Whether that's Middleton or someone else, who knows. But the key here is that Zanik was a player rep for 10 years. You don't do that for a decade without knowing how to connect with them on some level, and the networking that goes into it to be successful on some level. To me, this is the Jazz attempting to address a weakness (FA acquisition), keep good talent happy by recognizing game, demonstrates to the league how the Jazz operate, and (coincidentally) shows how much of a lolcow the Lakers really are.

But you gotta compare his record to other GM’s in the same period - i would think his strike rate would be pretty reasonable in comparison. Every GM has misses.

Zanik throws parties at his beach house in San Diego every year that many NBA players attend. There’s even a saying of “What happens at Zanik’s stays at Zanik’s.” He’s well connected and NBA players love him like a brother.

Acknowledge the facts and the proper perspective before you start the name calling. I'm glad DL will distance himself a tad from the hands on development of this franchise because he wasn't good at it. If he didn't luck out with Mitchell his tenure as GM was a failure but to some like you it was a success.

Exit interviews and all twitter chatter from Jazz beat writers say this is the case. I see nothing to indicate otherwise.

What about the incredible drain of assets we've experienced through the Point Guard position? DL may be good at a lot of things, but the dude appears to suck *** at PG.
He seems like a good person that does not always mean winning player though. That is cool to be finalist the NBA Community Assist Award but that does not mean he helps you win.
On paper he looks like a good player and watching him play he is okay. But teams dont really seem to improve when he joins them. Teams also dont seem to get worse when he leaves. Arguably a few have gotten better without him. That is what concerns me. But he has improved a lot each year so he might be trending up still and getting over that.
My take is that this is more about promoting DL. He seems like a big picture guy who wants his hand in everything. VPoBO seems like a position better suited for him and frees him up from the grind of dealing with players and agents.
What can DL as EVPoBO that he couldn’t/didn’t do as GM? I mean, he has been functioning in KOC’s capacity, which that was his title (sans the ‘executive’). I kinda view this like the really awkward Joe Rogan twitter interview where Jack Dorsey just sat there quiet while it was clear the other woman was there to be his voice while affording him a quasi-scapegoat.
I think it just frees him up from the micromanaging task that come with being a GM. He probably won't scout as much, won't deal with players 1 on 1 as much, won't deal with agents as much, etc. He can focus more on refining how the Jazz operate.
And now Zanick will have final say on personnel decisions.
Will he? That’s the most important part of being a higher up is to make personnel decisions. That would be DL relinquishing control so that he can focus on issues that are much less important.
