What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

But if we hit on Burke or Exum it likely changes the course if the franchise to where we might not get Mitchell.

Any lamenting on missing on guys should start post DM draft... it would have been nice to have the first for Ricky back but also Ricky helped DM transition so I’m really not sure that was a “waste” of a pick.

The best point guards in the league are top ten picks... we tried to get an elite pg with a high pick... it didn’t work out... tough tiddies

DL has got to be thinking Tobias/Conley at this point. I'm not as worried about the depth we'd lose, I think there's a decent chance Ekpe/Thabo could come back on vet min deals as well

My gut feeling is if we keep the 12 pick we would have drafted Dejounte Murray with the way Locke gushed about him that year. A Murray / Mitchell backcourt would be deadly on rookie contracts. With that said, like Cy stated, we may not have Mitchell in the first place had it played out that way.

Financially, it could happen.

Renounce/waive Favors, Rubio, Neto, Thabo and Udoh.

Sign Tobias ($32.7 million max)

Guarantee Korver's contract because it would be needed to make the salaries work with Memphis better than his nonguaranteed $3.5.

Trade Exum, Korver, Crowder, and Bradley ($28 million) for Conley ($34).

We might also have to waive or trade Niang ($1.6) to fit all this, but it does seem financially possible.

I think you can keep Neto and Niang if you trade the first rounder. I'd probably do that if I'm the Jazz.

Could you trade #23 for a future first round pick? That would help the Jazz in having assets to trade for Conley.

Wed had the same issue with Murray that we did with Rubio. Can't shoot

This might be my opinion but you don’t trade for Conley unless he says he’ll re-sign with the Jazz

I would assume that the #23 pick was outgoing in the Conley trade.

I have very little confidence we can sign anyone if there’s money available in the market. If we can get Conley for a pick and exum, then I’d do it. That’s like paying $1k in insurance for a $50k car. It’s a no brainer.

On the contrary, we have him for two years, we can see what it looks like with the rest of the team, and be happy that we actually made a big move.

Then in two years we re-evaluate and either open up a bunch of cap (just in time for Mitchell) or keep it rolling. We have two years worth of contingency plans at that point too.

The Jazz need top level talent and a pivot towards guys who win playoff games.

My guess is that one of the 76er free agents will lock up a long term deal and the other will walk. I know that most people prefer Tobias Harris, but I have a sinking feeling that he’ll stay in Philly and Jimmy Butler will be the one to test the market. I’m fine with that, because I think Butler should be the #1 rated target for the Jazz. Think he’d fit in perfectly - both as a player and as a personality.

Regardless of who it is, it seems like both Harris and/or Butler would be “Plan B” for most teams after striking out on KD, Kawhi, Kyrie, Kemba or trading for AD. The Jazz would benefit from making that guy their primary target. You run the risk that they’re not worth the max, but you have to take chances to get ahead. Getting a player like that without sinking too many assets into it would be extraordinary.

I've generally been in favor of trading for Conley, but there is something worth contemplating - Mike Conley actually has a PLAYER option after next year. And if he plays as well as he did last year, he absolutely will opt out and seek a final big contract. In other words - the only way he won't opt out is if he falls off the cliff and is nowhere close to being worth his contract...

Giving up $34 million dollars to go into free agency seems like a bit of a risk to me. He'll be 32... so probably not a max player. He might get a Millsap-esque contract, but that seems like a pretty significant risk to me.

Yeah, he might not get 34 the first year but he might get something like... 3/90... which would be worth it for him... The thing is... you should always assume the side with the option will play it perfect. Simply because his agent can talk to teams and gauge the interest. Before it's time for him to opt out he will know if he can get whatever he's looking for in free agency and if he can he will opt out, if not he will pick up the option.

Just like the stock market... that fact is baked into the acquisition price. Theoretically if he played well enough to pass on $35M we would have a really good year and he would likely want to stay... If he re-upped for 2 years $50-60M here that wouldn't be so bad... if he walks we have a **** ton of cap space.

If we trade Dante and a first in a ****** draft is that so bad? Might cost a 2020 pick instead of this year's pick, but the risk is all baked into the acquisition price... It's why Conley costs 1 first and maybe some extra stuff and Jrue would cost 3 firsts.

I get it we spent some assets on pgs, but you don't make decisions based on sunk costs... don't even factor it into the thinking at all.

I'm sick of giving up more and more 1sts for patchworks. We are up to 5 right now(in the last 5 years) and might be up to 7 1sts if we trade for Conley, 3 of them lottery picks for PGs and none of them started for more than 2 years. The problem is not that I'm looking at the sunk cost... the problem is that i'm looking at the process and getting Conley is continuation of that same process - just throwing away 1st round picks for rentals and hoping they patch up our horrible PG situation for a year or two. We have no plan and no solution for any longer than that. The plan is - when Conley opts out and leaves like Rubio and Hill... just throw another 1st at the next rental... rinse and repeat.

It's frustrating, but I don't even factor it into the current decision. They could ask Conley to pick up his option now if they wanted. He'd also be extension eligible so you could talk with him about that now.

Ricky was never a fit and that was a Hayward inspired choice. We spent a first on Exum and Burke but draft picks don't pan out... if Exum is used in part to acquire Conley you can't say that first now counts twice.

The best pgs in the league are largely top 5 or top 10 picks... we don't draft in that range often/ever.

My point is Conley is on sale now because of all of these factors... the risk drives down the price. It is why I think Memphis is basically forced to move him... waste another year of his production and he leaves and they get nothing... get hurt and they kill their cap and waste their money for 2 years when they had his replacement waiting in the wings.

Conley is like a top 5-10 pg... hill was more of a top 15ish guy... Ricky was... well Ricky was a great guy. If you were going to burn some draft assets on a pg now makes the most sense.

When Exum sustained his first injury I said the Jazz should strongly consider trading him because his timeline now didn't line up with Hayward and others so it was going to be a problem.... it became a problem and really hurt that iteration of the team. Exum is at the heart of this run of band aid pgs... he's been an expensive fail (at least to this point... who knows... maybe this is the year).

All of the pg trades were reasonable at the time... I get that they add up to a pile of meh, but it isn't like we pulled an Elton Brand and gave up multiple firsts for half a season of Tobias Harris just to watch him leave for Utah... I've seen the future btw.
