I would assume that the #23 pick was outgoing in the Conley trade.
If we're going after Tobias, trading for Conley would have to wait until after that for salary purposes.. unless we want to get rid of someone else.

On the contrary, we have him for two years, we can see what it looks like with the rest of the team, and be happy that we actually made a big move. This might be my opinion but you don’t trade for Conley unless he says he’ll re-sign with the Jazz
I've generally been in favor of trading for Conley, but there is something worth contemplating - Mike Conley actually has a PLAYER option after next year. And if he plays as well as he did last year, he absolutely will opt out and seek a final big contract. In other words - the only way he won't opt out is if he falls off the cliff and is nowhere close to being worth his contract...
Yeah, he might not get 34 the first year but he might get something like... 3/90... which would be worth it for him... The thing is... you should always assume the side with the option will play it perfect. Simply because his agent can talk to teams and gauge the interest. Before it's time for him to opt out he will know if he can get whatever he's looking for in free agency and if he can he will opt out, if not he will pick up the option.Giving up $34 million dollars to go into free agency seems like a bit of a risk to me. He'll be 32... so probably not a max player. He might get a Millsap-esque contract, but that seems like a pretty significant risk to me.

I'm sick of giving up more and more 1sts for patchworks. We are up to 5 right now(in the last 5 years) and might be up to 7 1sts if we trade for Conley, 3 of them lottery picks for PGs and none of them started for more than 2 years. The problem is not that I'm looking at the sunk cost... the problem is that i'm looking at the process and getting Conley is continuation of that same process - just throwing away 1st round picks for rentals and hoping they patch up our horrible PG situation for a year or two. We have no plan and no solution for any longer than that. The plan is - when Conley opts out and leaves like Rubio and Hill... just throw another 1st at the next rental... rinse and repeat.Just like the stock market... that fact is baked into the acquisition price. Theoretically if he played well enough to pass on $35M we would have a really good year and he would likely want to stay... If he re-upped for 2 years $50-60M here that wouldn't be so bad... if he walks we have a **** ton of cap space.
If we trade Dante and a first in a ****** draft is that so bad? Might cost a 2020 pick instead of this year's pick, but the risk is all baked into the acquisition price... It's why Conley costs 1 first and maybe some extra stuff and Jrue would cost 3 firsts.
I get it we spent some assets on pgs, but you don't make decisions based on sunk costs... don't even factor it into the thinking at all.
