What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I'm not sure it's possible to get a Tier 1 free agent while keeping Favors. I believe it's time to chose which one will make us not only better, but the best. I love Favors as much as the next guy and don't want to see him go, but that be what it takes to get a tier 1 player.

Right that is why I said pursue them and if you cant get one of them to commit, then keep Favors. Some of the tier 2 we might be able to get if we restructure Favors deal.

Why would Favs restructure his deal? It rarely ever happens... basically Favs is either on the team at $18M next year or he is on another team.

I think Tobias is the most likely.... I've been listening to some national podcasts and they really kind of challenge the idea they would even offer a regular max. I think they effed up and panic traded for Harris because they though Jimmy was leaving, but that may have been a mistake.

If they don't offer 5 year max I'm not sure why Harris would stay. I think the 5 year deal is more appealing to Butler than Tobias. I think they cave and offer 5 years to Jimmy... I think its 50/50 whether Tobias signs in Philly or somewhere else. Embiid and Simmons really don't compliment his game... if Butler stays it would be even worse... Tobias is basically the glue guy that makes those guys work. He may want the money and may be cool with that, but he'd have a great role here and Rudy does a lot that would help him. Embiid is great but he's not good in the screen and roll game... it sounds dumb but Rudy is such a good and willing screen setter... Harris and Rudy pick and rolls would be noice.

DM is our only mouth to feed right now... and when he isn't on ball he's a 40% catch and shoot guy... so it will help Tobias.

It comes down to what Tobias values... he said culture and fit. $50M may trump that, but it is reasonable to think a 3+1 player option max might help him recoup the lost $50M on the 5th year. He also has to know that if they max him and Butler the sixers will be moving one of Harris, Simmons, Butler, or Embiid after a year.

Of the players I listed first he is lowest, but I would be happy to get him. I dont think he is worth the max but we will have to overpay to get a solid FA. Walker seems like a possibility as well and I would prefer him by a decent amount.

Longer deal. We could bump it down a few million and give him 4 years.

We’d have to waive him to do it... hope he doesn’t get claimed and that he wants to negotiate with us. If he had other opportunities in the same price range I’m sure he’d go that route.

The market for center could be pretty bleak... I don’t think I’d spend more than 8 or 9M on a center that wasn’t a huge difference maker. Some teams will overpay but I don’t see it as a wise allocation of resources... so who knows... maybe Favs gets crunched in a tight market.

The thing to watch on Russell... if they don’t move Allen Crabbe around the draft then they don’t have max space for Jimmy unless the waive Russell’s caphold. It is rumored Jimmy may go there and it makes some sense.

If they move Crabbe they have no issue... if they don’t then Russell could become unrestricted.

I personally quite like the idea of running it back with Donovan, Rudy and a cast of characters.

Jingles
Royce
Seth Curry
Al Farouq Aminu
Looney
Beverly

Its an option on his contract right? So we are not waiving him we are just not picking up his option. That would make him a FA right away. Yes, he could go else where but I assume if we talked to him before he might agree. Favors is a difference maker. He was our 3rd best player and was arguably our best player in the playoffs. He can play the 4 and 5 for us. Him and Rudy arent the best fit but they can play together well if we have a PG that can shoot. He was our best rim protector statistically this year and our best big at guarding outside the paint.

If we can get a big name FA, then by all means let him go. If we can figure a way to keep him as well even better. But dont let him go to pick up meh players. He is worth more than that in a trade later.

I dunno, after watching the warriors last night, I honestly think you can only have one traditional big man on your roster. The rest need to be highly specialized for varying looks depending on what offense you’re dealing with. I’d kill to have Looney and Jordan Bell

He is unguaranteed... not an option. You either waive him or his contract guarantees at the full amount. We wouldn’t have bird rights or any of that... if after he cleared waivers he wanted to negotiate a deal with us we could use cap space... I’m guessing we’d have to slightly overpay his non-Utah market to make him happy.

Love the guy but we aren’t making a meaningful change if he is around next year.

You don’t have to kill anyone we could sign either guy.

You need a backup center but they are plentiful... the playoffs get smaller and more skilled as they progress, but I don’t think you can play that way night in and night out.
