Rudy Gobert selected to third team All-NBA

Somehow I feel Rudy might be the kind of player who realises that a supermax will only hurt his chances of winning a title here.

It puts the franchise in a tough position. He is a reasonable man so he may accept regular max with 8% raises to stay.

They also may change the cba or amend it so that the excess amount doesn’t count against the cap or tax... it helps teams retain the guy by giving money but isn’t an excess penalty.

The worst part is GS of course wins again because Klay can’t get super max which would cause some constraints for them going forward... boo cba makers.

He’s a thoughtful dude. I’m not sure he’s give back money thoughtful but I think we could convince him to pass on it and give him 5 years or some other comp. I think the conversation happens next year so if he refuses to work with us you can always move him if you don’t feel he is worth it.

He’s more than just our best player though... he’s embraced the market and team concept... great leader... I just think I’d choose to pay him if it came down to it... even if it is a bad deal. Either way I’d always be a Rudy Stan.
 


5 years $247 million? Holy s*** that's almost $50 million a year.

Just more absurdity to the notion of "hey, it's not do-or-die this summer, we've got plenty of time, and besides, Karl and John took 10 years to reach the finals so let's be patient!"

It makes this offseason all the more important, if only to show Rudy we’re moving in the right direction.

I agree completely. I know most Jazz fans love him but I just can not see a team where Gobert is the best and highest paid player on a team winning a championship. Trade him for assets and start Favors at center. I'm tired of our best player being useless once we reach an elite team in the playoffs. In his exit interview, Gobert said the team needs to make hard decisions. He had to have been referring to choosing between him and Favors. Paying what the Jazz pay for both of them when they're basically starting centers (well one is a very expensive back-up center), it doesn't leave enough money for other positions.

I think Gobert wants a choice to be made and I don't know if Lindsey has the guts to make that choice. Lindsey always bets on the wrong horse. He sincerely believed the Jazz had a real chance re-signing Hayward, he sincerely believed Exum was worth investing in, now Exum is tying up $11 million a year the next two years while being perpetually injured, Lindsey believes the Jazz can win a championship with a team built around Gobert. I just don't see it. Gobert is going to want all-star money but he doesn't bring it on offense like all-star players do. There is no other all-star caliber player in the league that requires an expensive insurance player (Favors) for his weaknesses. The Jazz can't afford to treat Gobert like the king he wants to be treated as and have money needed for offense in other positions.

I don't see the Jazz being a finals contender with a team designed around Gobert. I think Gobert is clearly the best trade piece the Jazz have right now. I don't think Gobert will re-sign with the Jazz if they continue being just a good team that has nothing for elite teams in the west. So either get something for Gobert or watch him leave in a few years. I have no issue admitting being wrong. If the Jazz start inching closer to the WCF/Finals with a team built around Gobert, I'll admit I was wrong. I will graciously admit being wrong. Quote this post and I will acknowledge I was wrong. I just wish if we're going to be paying all-star money for a player, that they could actually contribute in an exciting way against elite teams. if they can't do that, don't bet the house on them.


This team needs a point guard and doesn't have the assets useful for the Grizzlies to make a Conley trade. This team is going to be getting another fringe starting caliber 1 or 2 year temporary point guard band-aid while also needing to upgrade at shooting forward or the 4 and being married to Gobert's ego and upcoming pay day. It's an ugly situation the team is in

The cap and shorter contracts really shorten championship windows. This offseason is critical to hopefully get that third piece. If father time doesn't get you, then cap mechanics will. The slow build is gone. Teams that can pivot faster in either direction and that go hard in that direction will be the most successful. If you are a free agent destination you could hang out in the middle and hope to get the max guys... but markets like ours need to stack picks on picks or just have unreal draft luck.

I don't think Rudy would leave us though. I think we end up extending him in some form or fashion next season unless he gets hurt. The excess value on his contract likely doesn't exist on his next deal.
 
Supermax contracts are ridiculous. One player will eat 35% of your cap up. Unless your name is Giannis, I wouldn't give you that type of scratch.

If that means you had to let Rudy walk, so be it, but those contracts just cripple your franchise.
