What if he refuses to pay the fine?

I'm more in favor of banning him for life. The fine seems weird. I mean, how did they come up with the number? Why $500,000? Why not $100,000? or $25,000? Is it because he's a billionaire? Would a guy with only 100 million get fined less?

I remember when Coach Pop got fined $250k for resting players. That was 2012. In 2019 it is common practice. I remember thinking back then that if I was Coach Pop I would have refused to pay it or gone to court over it. I'm no lawyer and I'm not familiar with the league's by-laws, but these fines seem crazy.

I definitely think the amount is due to his wealth. And I think that's the way it should be.

How is it possible in USA that a private company can issue a fine - is it same from the legal point of view that police gives you when you have some traffic violations etc.?
Technically, can NBA fine any random person and if he is a foreigner and refuses to pay, then in theory he might receive some jail or court time should he step on the US soil?

Shane Kiesel was an ***. He acted like an *** and then failed to own up to it. I’m still not sure that it was racist, but it was certainly offensive and over the line. Maybe it was racist. I thought it seemed more homophobic tbh. I still think part of the severity of the situation was due to Westbrook’s visceral reaction. With that said, I still think the lifetime ban was justified.

My only question is why can Drake pull similar ******** without any penalty? His antics certainly cross lines as well. I think it’s hilarious for any Raptors player or fan to call foul when they won’t say **** about Drake.

THIS (Drake) is the burr up my behind on this issue. Why is Drake allowed to get away with behavior that no other fan would? Because he's a celebrity, that's why. Celebrities enjoy enormous privileges not afforded to other people, and while I understand why that occurs (humans have always been obsessed with celebrity), it annoys me to no end. If this had been just another fan, no way in hell he/she would have gotten away with it. Hold celebrities to the same standards/rules as the rest of us, they really don't need yet more privileges. Next time he does something like this, kick his *** out of the game like they would anyone else.
 
Insecure defensive reactions are quite a bit more than I expected.

I doubt they can, but they can probably say "$500K and a year, or banned forever, your choice".

They can fine members of their own organization. That being said, if I was Coach Pop and David Stern fined my $250k for resting my players, I'd fight it in court.

As others have said the NBA can only fine members of the Association (e.g., owners and players) under threat of banning or terminating membership and contracts. The NBA has no authority to fine fans, their only power is to ban us from arenas and/or invalidate tickets. Police have the power of law behind them, the NBA has only their own rules which fans are free to ignore.
