What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I think the Jazz will have a very tough time landing any max guy simply because of supply and demand. There's a whole of teams, many in big markets so competition is fierce.

Off the top of my head, here's the teams that have cap space for max guys so he eats one of those slots.

Atlanta
Brooklyn (2)
Dallas
Indiana
LA Clippers (2)
LA Lakers
New York
Philadelphia
Utah

That's not counting teams like Toronto or Denver that can get max money by tweaking a few things.

Point is, go into FA assuming that we get nobody that's a gamechanger and you'll probably feel a bit better about the most likeliest of outcomes.
Yep, it really sucks. Just hope and pray that KD changes teams.

Been prepared for this for a while. Not because I'm cynical, but just because. DL has already indicated his level of optimism regarding free agency through his decisions. If anyone hasn't been taking a gander at Kevin Love, they're not reading the tea leaves. However, it does seem increasingly concerning to me that they're looking/hoping for a reason to bring Favors back.
I would rather bring back favors than trade for love

If KD and Kyrie go to Brooklyn (saw a report that said the injury doesn't affect their pursuit of him) then it frees up Tobias (maybe) and DLo. I think if that happens we have a pretty good shot to get one of them. Tobias still may go back to Philly or maybe he has interest in NY.

If we missed on them I still say go after Rudy Gay and Pat Beverly (also Caruso... every fa plan involves him and I no longer feel like I need to mention it) on decent sized 1+1 deals... might have to go 2-3 years, which at the right number I am cool with. Solid players but they can also be salary ballast in a trade down the line if something good becomes available. Say Philly re-signs Tobias and has some buyer's remorse... those guys can fit on almost any team.

It would be nice to get that third star, but we can also jump a tier with solid guys that fit and with DM taking a step forward.

If we knew that Tobias wasn't in play, we should be trying to do an Atlanta/Brooklyn type trade where we absorb a contract and pick up a draft pick.

If we added $10 million of salaries so we can move up, we still have around $25-30 million in cap room (depending on if Korver is here, or part of the trade, or retires). So even if we take a contract, we can still offer Russell a max deal or Randle a big deal or pick up Gay and Beverley or keep Favors and add another guy.

I think we have to trade up in this draft. There are too many teams who seem willing to trade their pick and so many guys who would seem to fit us nicely.

Not I. I'd rather move on from Favors and sign Jabari as a buy-low.

That wasn't what he said doe... I'd rather keep Favs than trade for Love... Love has one of the worst contracts in the NBA... He's one injury from having to add multiple picks just to have off the books.

The one thing that has been blindingly obvious is that the Jazz management HATES this draft. They just aren't seeing anything of value there. I highly doubt they are angling for more or slightly better picks.

Maybe it's a smoke screen? Maybe they hate anybody they see at #23 but would love some of the guys in the late lottery?

Hell, I don't know...

I'd take Love, only if he is essentially free, after all other options have passed.

Nah... we aren't taking dead salary for picks. Just use the space on good players... we need good players, not picks that could turn into good players someday. We are past that part of the build. If we miss on guys in the tier of Gay/Beverly and want to take on salary for a pick then the player needs to be able to at least be a rotation piece (like marvin Williams or Kelly Olynyk). There are a couple guys I like that will go before we pick like Nickeil Walker Alexander, but some of the dudes that @Saint Cy of JFC is pimping like Weatherspoon and Terrence Davis are just as intriguing imo. I don't see a big benefit in moving up and taking ugly salary to do it right now.... honestly I'd rather move back into the 30s and get something extra for the trouble.

How is that obvious?

Walt Perrin indicated they thought there were guys they like available around where we are picking... I think we are looking to move the pick for something to help win now, but I think if nothing good comes up they are fine making the pick.

I basically think if we move the pick it is for Conley... Woj mentioned again last night that we are still looking at Conley when saying we might move the pick.

I just don't see the players we are definitely adding in free agency. Sure we might get a Beverley, but I'm not sure why he is leaving the Clippers and how much would that cost us? Same with Gay.

I don't want to take back a monster deal (Parsons, Whiteside, etc.) but I think taking back the right $10-13 million deal could work well for us (MKG, Olynyk, Leuer, etc.). I would rather have the guy we traded up for AND still have $25 million than not have any player we traded up for AND no good free agent signing.

I know, but what I'm saying is that if you're saying keep Favors because it's a better option than Love, you may as well waive Favors and sign Jabari. I know the FO doesn't feel that way, but bringing back Favors is pretty pointless at this point.

I think 10M on a 1+1 for Bev is close... Rudy 15M 1+1 is close... might have to be 2+1 in both cases, but I would love the fit with the starting lineup. If it netted an extra pick I'd take on salary I guess, but I don't see a need to move into late lotto in this draft. I'd rather try and do a deal with Philly or Atlanta that have multiple seconds or trade the first for Phoenix second this year and next. I just think the draft is pretty flat. I don't think we'd get two seconds this year because we may end up with a roster spot crunch.

Moving up is sexy AF, but moving back might be the move.

I know what both of you are saying... it was just two different things and I was pointing that out. You know I'm firmly on the "waive Favs and move on" bus.
