What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Here's my biggest issue with Conley (and I've love to hear a counter argument to it). Conley has two years left on his deal. When that deal is done Conley will be 34 years old and his career will likely be about over. Meaning he won't be a top guy for the Jazz to resign. They'll also likely have Mitchell on a max deal that point and Rudy on a supermax deal, meaning there will be 0 cap space. There likely won't be any potential all star players whose bird rights the Jazz have. That basically hand cuffs the Jazz and leaves no real free agency options.

Finding a guy in free agency this year whether it's an all star like D Lo or two younger potentially impact players, at least that would lock them up for longer and then give us Bird rights to them to potentially resign those players when we don't have any cap space.

Except for Max contracts, at the end, also deal with an expanding salary cap. Conley's contract, when he signed, was viewed as a contract killer. Now, it's big, but not bloated. The max for Mitchell is going to be affordable. Gobert is going to be sizeable, but we will see what he actually demands. If things are going poorly, Gobert or Mitchell will be tradeable. If you are going to be over the cap it is good to have star players. Imagine being the Wizards or the Suns.

If getting Conley forces our hand on finding another 4 option, landing Jabari could be a pretty big deal as he can very well be a 20 ppg guy for us (he previously has been such) and in two years when Conley expires, Jabari May very well be a core player for us, so I’d rather roll the dice on that than try to maintain some type of perceived flexibility.

Use whatever assets necessary to get Conley and then hope Jabari signs.

If we traded Favors and Korver plus picks for Conley, we'd end up with about $7.5 Million in cap space. Maybe they dump Crowder to free up around $15.5 million for a second-tier free agent? They'd also still have the MLE of almost $9 million. That would be interesting.

Has this been posted? Interesting take on the Jazz from an outsider perspective:

Two things stand out as needs for the Jazz: One, with the news that re-signing Ricky Rubio is likely not going to happen, the path is clear for Donovan Mitchell to assume full control of the offense, and given his sporadic shooting and hard-driving ways, surrounding him with as many floor spacers as possible would make sense. It would be nice if those shooters doubled as front-court players to address Utah's lack of depth in that area, and also, perhaps, give them and ability to play different lineups when Rudy Gobert isn't working as quite such a dominant force in certain matchups.

Nic Claxton out of Georgia is a nice backup option and complement to Gobert at center. He should be a more versatile defender on the perimeter than Gobert, and he can step out and shoot in a way Gobert can't. I also think Cameron Johnson, who we've talked about a lot in this range, makes sense. So does a guy like Grant Williams, who a lot of casual fans became familiar with during Tennessee's NCAA Tournament run. Williams is a beast at 6-8 and rock solid, and he can shoot it and handle himself on the perimeter.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Utah traded this pick along with maybe Dante Exum -- or perhaps Derrick Favors if they pick up his options with the intent to move -- to jump up in the draft order.

If it were up to me (it isn’t), I’d be making them take Exum and keeping Korver. If we could land Conley, Jabari, and Dedmon, we’re in business.

I don't see how we get Russell as a FA. I think Nets do a sign/trade with someone.
If we let Indy trade for Conley, then Brooklyn signs Kyrie and another, then Russell is sitting there. Clippers are building around SAG. Russell could go play with Doncic but hopefully Donovan has more pull. NY has Smith Jr. Atlanta has Trae. Kings have Fox. He won't go back to the Lakers.

I like our chances

Why wouldn't the Suns go for Russell?

Jabari is a legit asset too so far as value/talent to cost ratio. Obviously he may not mature and continue to not give a **** on d but he showed signs of improving last year.

And we need legit assets.
