What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Like I have said, I'm OK with Mirotic replacing Favors OR Crowder. I'm scared as Hell with him replacing Favors AND Crowder.

I mean we could sign a backup center so it isn't just Niko and Niang… its Niko/Niang/Lopez or Davis or Dedmon. I'm also convinced Willie Reed makes the roster... so maybe they sign Demarre Carroll with the room exception and go ultra cheap on backup center.

Elfrid Payton is soooo bad. Caruso is a three point sniper and slightly bigger than Payton and just as athletic. Payton has no shooting and all of the downsides of Exum with not as much upside. If we are keeping Exum, we have no need of Payton who is a poor man's Exum.

Payton and Exum's numbers are quite similar actually, except Payton has double the assists per-minute than Exum. Payton's defensive +/- numbers appear to be a bit better than Exum. Payton may be bad like you say, but whatever he is, Exum is far worse.

I'm thinking Carrol getting our room exception is what is going to happen regardless of whatever else takes place.

If you want me to represent the Favors homers, then I think we're real close on how we see things. If you can get Mirotic + something else useful for Favors, then I'm probably in. But it depends on what the something else useful is.

And the calculus is different if it's not Mirotic. I'm not taking Portis or JaMychal Green (or other similar non-positive players who happen to shoot the 3) just to say we moved Favors to get a stretch 4.

Thank you! He’s been on **** teams with no real system. He’s actually a very solid guard, especially as a backup.

Eh, assist numbers in Quinn's system need a translation. I would have to project Payton into the Exum role on the Jazz. The eye test tells me that Exum has much more tools to work with, especially on defense. This depends upon him playing healthy, of course. Payton has the definite edge there. Again, I like the Devil I know.

Maybe... he might get more on a one year deal or go full ring chaser or LAL. He will be in demand.

I just think you could swap Favors for something like Mirotic at any point in the season next year. He's not going to lose value. There is a large chance that pairing him with one of the best Pick and roll points in the NBA, drastically increases Favor's value, either towards a trade or makes him integral to the team. If we get Mirotic and Meh for Favors, and Mirotic remains streaky, we are kind of screwed. Favors is a better bet as far as asset value is concerned. There are other players that are better asset risks.

Mirotic on his worst night spaces the floor better than Favors on his best. That counts a hell of a lot when you have THE premier screen-setting roll man that happens to have virtually the highest reach in the league. I think that dynamic has the potential to kill small ball a lot of the time, but it requires GOOD spacing.

Crowder was streaky too... just he was worse overall... and we were amazing with him on the floor. If we kept Favs we won't invest in a solid NBA backup center... there might be one available but if you move Favs midseason for something like Mirotic (like we are shopping at a car lot and there are lots of options) then you need to address backup center too.

Additionally, I would love the Jazz to have 5-out potential lineups and Favors kills that too (even though he’s a really good basketball player).

We need to look to raise the ceiling of the team. Our best 5 man units need shooters at the 4... doesn't have to be Niko but he's a viable option.

I'd take Rudy Gay, JaMychal Green... but long term why are we still messing with this... even if we kept him this year do you see us being a match for each other next year?

I can live with streaky at 7 million and with the Favors safety blanket. When Crowder went cold we could go 3 or 4 minutes without a bucket. Obviously, a lot of that was on Rubio too. I don't know I just don't see the "eye of the tiger" in Mirotic. The Jazz do well with guys that have high motors and moxie. I'm probably overreacting.
