What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

We need to trade Favors the absolute best value we can get. He gets his option picked up (which he says matters a lot to him), and we get something rather than losing it for nothing.

Don't we get something by not picking up his deal though? Like 17 million dollars to spend this summer or something like that?

Ideas I'm thinking -

Low-level
Favors to a team with space for a 2nd or two (Sac, Boston, Atlanta, NY). We still have the space, but Favors gets paid and we get something. This idea makes sense if we are going with Niko or others.

Bigger
Favors for a Winslow Miami salary dump package or another scenario I don't see right now. Or maybe Favors and Exum in something even bigger.

I don’t think he’s willing is the whole thing.
I agree, I think he wants to play more and make more money. He can go back to Europe and make a lot more money and be a starter and leader over there again. He won the Euroleague final 4 MVP last time he was there. That seems like a lot more fun and a lot more money then sitting on the bench in the NBA all season. I think he was hoping to make a bigger role for himself here but he just isnt good enough for that. I would be shocked if he wasnt back international next year. I guess some crap team in the NBA might offer him a bigger role. But he is also old so there is no reason a team here would do that.

Udoh has to be one of the nicest people in the NBA and I wish him all the luck wherever he goes. Ill always cheer for him.

He’s plenty good to be a backup 5 in the NBA. I’m pretty sure that’s what he was sold on here. But then we never moved on from Favors so he never saw the floor.

Udoh doesn’t bring much offense, but he is a great defensive player and we’d be lucky if he wanted to stay.

Offer JaMychal Green the full room exception the moment FA begins. Clippers have bigger things to focus on. He is a perfect fit here and I think there is a decent chance he takes it. This lets Favors play all the backup 5 minutes and then split the minutes at the 4 with Green and if needs be we can do small ball with Royce or Ingles. We also still have Niang. This lets us see how Favors fits with Conley and Gobert. It also allows us to trade him if we decide to go that route later when his value will be highest.

Is there another player that can shoot as well as he can, rebound, and still play solid defense at the 4 that we could get?

If we get him then our roster just needs another wing. Hopefully we can get one for the min. Looking at what happened in the ESPN mock FA it looks like there should be a few players that we could get there. Avery Bradley went for min and would be a solid fit. Wilson Chandler would be a great fit as well. Alex Caruso would be nice as well but I doubt he goes for that cheap, but we could waive Neto and/or trade Bradley and clear up 3 million to offer him before using the tpe.

He could be okay at that here but he isnt worth more than the min to us. Most teams want some sort of offense out of their center, I dont see any other team offering him much, maybe one team offers him the trade room exception but I am not sure who. He really liked his time in Europe as a star player and got paid a lot more. He was the highest paid American player outside of the NBA in basketball before coming to the Jazz.

Don't teams often want expiring contracts to free up money for free agency the best summer or simply if they are in cap hell?

Sure but it’s a big contract so finding a match is tough... we aren’t in the mode of helping teams free up money (teams only want to free up bad money)... and a contract that has a second unguaranteed year is more valuable... so we’ve essentially had the guy on an expiring deal for two years and haven’t moved him for something... why is this the year his value is good and we can just pivot later?

I’ll be okay with whatever happens, as this offseason was already a major success. We have three all-star level players on the roster.

I do think the better roster move is to let Fav go to better surround our “Big 3” with more shooting, but that requires the right guys to be interested at the right price. It’ll be fun to see how it plays out. A lot of intrigue left in this offseason.

We can still get that 17 million plus an asset if we pick up the option and trade him to a team with cap space instead of just waiving him.
I was just pointing out that if his option was not picked up it isn't like we get nothing. We do get money to spend on players.

Most of who we can get will play out once the dominos start falling. I suspect what happens is this:

• Utah explores trade opportunities for Derek and Exum, possibly other pieces depending on who's left after the bloodletting begins.

• Utah picks up Favors option, but readies to pull the trigger on a deal as necessary.

• Once the dominos fall, Utah moves Favors (depending on who's left) for cap space. They sign who's remaining.
