What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I haven’t kept up on this.

So now that we have Conley aren’t we going to throw the kitchen sink at Harris? It seems like only getting Conley this summer would only improve us nominally.

Where does it look like Harris is headed to?

To be able to be in a position to get Harris we’d need to move either Exum or Ingles and let Favors go. As of right now it sounds like the 76ers or Nets might be the best landing spot.

Conley provides more than “nominal” improvement.

Does the word nominal mean championship or sumthin?

People really underselling how freaking good Conley is. I’m cool with keeping Favs even though I think the best use of that space is for something to get some depth... even if we run it back as is with some “nominal” depth pieces I think we are 55 wins and a top 3 seed with a chance to get to the finals... not the favorite but have a chance.

Joe and Favs unlocked something kinda great last year.

Favors has been in the trade block for 12 years. His contract last year had more value than this year. His contract value decreases as the season goes on... it’s an expiring... why they hell would it gain value?

Because he is:
1. An expiring contract
2. A huge difference maker on defense
3. Affordable

And being on the same team with one of the greatest pick and roll guards in the game will be a huge difference maker. It seems like Ingles is the only person on the Jazz that can complete the pick and roll consistently without throwing the ball at Favor's ankles (they do this to Rudy too.) Favors will look awesome. There are so many more teams that see a way to competition. Favors is a "win now" guy. With the league more wide open, and the obvious nerfing of the tank, there will be a lot more interest in what he can give.

It means we still need to add pieces. And no, I don’t think we are a top 3 team with Conley. He opens up the potential to be one, but he alone doesn’t do it. While I think we were limited with Rubio no matter how many other pieces we added.

Nuggets, Blazers, Rockets, Warriors (once Klay gets back), and Thunder are all better than us. Especially OKC and Houston, I feel like they’re awful matchups for us. I don’t have confidence that we’d beat those 5 teams in a playoff series as currently constituted.

We need more pieces, especially in the shooting department.

We need more players, sure. But the Nuggets, Blazers, and especially the Thunder are no way in hell better than us come playoff time. We need to address our issues with the Warriors (who fall off next year) and Houston (still there), while handling our business with the Lakeshow.

I am starting to think this more and more that Favors makes us better than just about anyone we can pick up next year.

If we pick up a different couple players to fill in Favors role then we will have an adjustment period that could take a full season. It can take awhile to build good chemistry. Chemistry Favors already has with our team. He knows his role and plays it well. I like the idea of Harris but he might struggle to fit in and struggle to find his role and develop chemistry.

Plus Favors is a perfect pick and roll man for both Conley and Ingles. Gobert struggles in the pick and roll with players that dont throw the lob well to him. Conley might be able to pick it up but he only had one lob pass to JJJ despite feeding him a lot and him being an above the rim tall big. Conley might be better off playing with Favors more. If Exum is healthy no one has been better at throwing the lob to Gobert than him. Hopefully they can get that going again this year.

Also, he can be traded for anyone, not just someone who happens to be a free agent this year.

Except it takes two to tango so he can’t really be traded for anyone and half the league are free agents this year so it’s a huge pool.

If you want Favs you pick up the option and keep him... all in or waive him. We aren’t keeping him to say maybe we can pivot later.

I really wished we better understood the other side of the coin of why expiring contracts are valuable.
