What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

We need more players, sure. But the Nuggets, Blazers, and especially the Thunder are no way in hell better than us come playoff time. We need to address our issues with the Warriors (who fall off next year) and Houston (still there), while handling our business with the Lakeshow.

I disagree.

Rockets and Warriors are still the cream of the crop and would beat us.

Blazers could/would go small and fast and run us out of the gym. We have to find some pieces to counter their speed and shooting.

OKC still has playoff P, the man who murdered us all last year. Even with Conley, we don’t have enough to get past them. We only beat them two years ago because Billy D was stupid enough to keep playing our best player, Carmelo Anthony. Without him, OKC would’ve beaten us.

I’ll concede that Denver is a bit of a stretch. But their backcourt is extremely talented.

We still need more pieces and right now I wouldn’t consider us a top 3 team. We are a top 5 team with potential. But we’re not top 3 without adding some additional pieces. Add Harris and I’ll admit then that we’re a top 3 team in the west. Agree to disagree.

Depending on who the Lakers pick pick up I think they are going to be the top team in the West.

Golden State might be good by the playoff time but they are going to struggle in the regular season without Durant and Klay. Steph will keep them competitive but not the top seed.

Denver is slightly improved and a regular season team so they will probably be the 1 or 2 seed in the regular season. But they arent a playoff team. They are too soft and no defense. The team follows their top player in that way.

Portland will be about the same as they have been the last two years.

The Thunder will continue to fall off. Westbrook is getting worse. PG kept them good the first half of the year but really fell off the second half.

Houston will be good in the regular season again and I think will be neck and neck with the Jazz for the 3rd seed. But I think Jazz, Lakers, Houston, and Denver will be all pretty close in the standings. I hope Jazz can really get hot early though. They have a chance to be the top seed in the West if things go well and we are healthy.

Clippers are a wild card depending on who they pick up.

Who the Jazz pick up in FA could change things. If we pick up a couple really solid well fitting vets we could be the front runner. Also we have to be healthy, which is always a big if with the Jazz.

Warriors minus Durant and Klay are not the cream of the crop.

OKC not only lost to us in the playoffs 2 years ago, they also finished behind us last year in the standings and we improved our team while they have not.

Harris is a nice player and possibly a good fit but I dont think it makes that big of a difference especially when you consider losing both Favors and Exum next year to get him.

Conley adds more than just a couple wins to the Jazz. 7 games more wins and we are the #1 seed last year. I think Conley makes us 7 games better. He is a huge upgrade over Rubio on both ends of the court. He opens up the court so much for us. I think we move into the top 10 offense next year to go with one of the top 3 defenses. 3 more ppg makes us the 7th best offense last year. Conley will get us at least that per game over Rubio, plus better defense.

We ghosted them two years ago and they have done little to remediate that situation. Funny how we keep forgetting that. Also, I will put Conley and Mitchell against Dame and CJ in a playoff series and Denver doesn't frighten me. That leaves GSW and Houston. Golden State will not come back with nearly the firepower they did this year, and if so, they are likely down two players for most of the year. Our issue with Houston was we did not hit our open looks. The system did it's job, but we didn't execute after that (as cliche as it is).

We need 3d players sure, but don't underestimate how much Conley improves our offensive situation.

Because he is:
1. An expiring contract
2. A huge difference maker on defense
3. Affordable

And being on the same team with one of the greatest pick and roll guards in the game will be a huge difference maker. It seems like Ingles is the only person on the Jazz that can complete the pick and roll consistently without throwing the ball at Favor's ankles (they do this to Rudy too.) Favors will look awesome. There are so many more teams that see a way to competition. Favors is a "win now" guy. With the league more wide open, and the obvious nerfing of the tank, there will be a lot more interest in what he can give.

None of those things change his trade value. It does not increase as the season goes on... he has been on an expiring contract the last two years.

If you want to keep him then fine... but his trade value increasing as the season goes is dumb rationale because it just isn’t true.

Anyone arguing OKC is better than is is dumb AF. We kicked they *** a couple years ago... now we are way better and they are declining and aren’t able to improve because of cap issues and no picks... they are ***... gtfo with that.

Torn ACLs aren’t what they used to be. Especially since his game wasn’t predicated on speed anyway. Klay will be back fairly quickly. Even without Durant, Golden State nearly took out Toronto. People are being overly optimistic thinking that their window has closed.

OKC was a better team this year than when we faced them two years ago. I don’t care what records say. Sorry, you can agree to disagree but I remember most on this board agreed with me in desiring to avoid them at all costs in the playoffs.

And who’s this Exum you’re talking about? People really expect to get any meaningful production from him this year? Even when healthy he sucked.

OKC improved significantly last year just by shedding Melo.

I fail to see how they’re in decline. Do we have evidence that Westbrook, George, or Adams are in decline?

I get that fan is short for fanatic and it’s crazy to not say that we didn’t beat them down two years ago because we’re awesome. But the truth is we owe a significant amount of credit to our playoff victory against them two years ago to Melo. He was our best player just ahead of Mitchell. His 32 mins with 38 percent shooting, 12 pts, and zero defense really fueled our team.

Watch this video if you don’t think Melo contributed heavily To our playoff victory two years ago:

Yes... pg had surgery and Westbrook and Adams have been on a steady decline.

OKC ends up getting us on the second night of back to backs during the season... so regular season we may have lost a couple... in the playoffs we’d beat them in 5. They trash.

Conley's contract has made our bench thin, unless we are gambling on a healthy year from Dante, it needs to be shored up. That's the debate now, can we use the cap space to get 2 guys who are playable in the playoffs for 1 18M Derrick Favors.

Injuries happen, right now if we've got half the team that is around GLeague ability and on minimum contracts, we're toast.
