What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I think the Jazz would have to guarantee Favors’ salary, though.
Favors guarantee date is July 6; free agency opens at noon on July 6.

Is the guarantee by EOD July 6? If so, the Jazz may be able to work something out.

There are several big free agents this offseason and many teams are trying to create room to sign one of these. Some may find themselves in awkward situations, such as having to get rid of $0.8m/year contract of a 21 old. My priority would be taking advantage of any such desperate team. Utah has to get either creative or bold though as their draft picks are gone and books full. But opportunities like these don't come too often and they are particularly hard to miss if you manage a small market team.

Cheick Diallo and Frank Jackson (I think NOP would have to waive him to create max space. They might waive him regardless)

Trade hasn't gone through yet.

Strong indication Rubio is headed to Indiana, but they'll have to get rid of Thad or Bojan (along with their other FAs) to make it happen (they have ~3mil in non-guaranteed contracts they can drop
as well).

The idea is to add Rubio to the Memphis trade, and potentially find a fourth team to take some of the surplus salary from Indiana.

Indiana keeps Thad and Bojan (and Wes, Tyreke, Corey Joseph and Kyle O'Quinn if they feel like it), and their full MLE.
Jazz keep their full MLE, their BAE--and can potentially use Favors and Exum in an S&T for Tobias Harris (or someone else?)
Deal stays the same for Memphis.

Makes some sense if you can find a team that can absorb a few mil or wants Doug McDermott...
Quoting myself...

For Indiana: Holiday + Johnson + Sumner = $5,244,283 in non-guaranteed and expiring contracts.
Salary Indiana can receive in a trade for those three: $9,277,495.25.

Looks like a good number for Rubio. Why would they voluntarily lose the MLE when they can do something like this?

Sounds like the jazz were going to go after Niko, where do the jazz turn to next?

There's a report that they're going to meet with Bobby Portis once free agency starts and they also have significant interest in Bojan Bogdanovic.

Can’t see the jazz going after Portis as he’s a RFA. They’d have to drop Favors just to sign an offer sheet. I also don’t think Bogdanovic leaving Indiana.

Forgive my complete ignorance, but could we somehow make this three-way work with sign and trades or some voodoo?:

Utah gets: Bogdonavic, Harris
Indiana gets: Rubio, Ingles, MLE
Memphis gets: Exum added to deal
Favors is waived.

Jazz clear 17, 12, 11 and MLE (9?) in space
= 49 million
= 18 for Bogdonavic, 31 for Tobias

Lineup:

Conley, Palacio
Mitchell, Giricek
Bogdonavic, Handlogten
Harris, Gilliam
Gobert, Det. Polynice

Free agency officially stars at 6:00 pm EST Sunday. Contracts aren't official until July 6th, but they can be signed. Unofficially, though, free agency has already begun, evidenced by Kemba allegedly agreeing to a contract with Boston. League doesn't care anymore about tampering.

At least a couple reasons that doesn't work:
- You can't trade an exception.
- The Jazz have to send out $39.2m to take in $49m. Exum and Ingles make $21.6. I don't see Indiana paying Ricky $17.6m. Favors would have to be included somehow.
- Why swap Ingles and Bogdonavic? I'd guess both teams prefer to keep their own guy.

Thanks for the explanation.

Right. That doesn't answer the question though. Are the Jazz able to trade Favors between noon and midnight on the 6th to a team that immediately waives him before his contract is guaranteed?

That is, do the Jazz have to make a decision on Favors before or after free agency starts?
