I would guess this has to do with choosing more contemporary players in favor of ancient ones, considering that this is strictly a popularity contest and that there is so little reliable frame-of-reference or even compatibility to the modern game.
That’s a big reason I don’t do these. An 80’s or 90’s and onward draft makes sense for that reason.
It's not fair to the older generations to say that they are irrelevant for a draft like this. If some of these guys were raised with the resources players have now, some of these legends would be even better. If you dominate your era, it's reasonable to think that you would be good in any era. They might not dominate at the same level, but they would be a factor.
And sometimes, the eras would make contemporary stars worse. Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell did what they did triple teamed in the post. Imagine if they weren't or imagine if others were...
