El Paso Shooting

I would simply propose that Trumpism is a unique American specie of nascent fascism. Trump is not the first demagogue in our history. The problem today is that his Party is so far completely reluctant to criticize the troubling eruption of nationalistic authoritarianism, or authoritarian nationalism, that Trump represents. So, while we can hope, and believe, that our long lasting experiment as a democracy counts for something, and our democratic institutions are strong, circumstances currently reflect, I believe, how Rep. Nadler described them yesterday: namely, that we are in the midst of the most serious constitutional crisis since the Civil War.

Maybe it's just me, but at least in Utah, I've seen many people go from being vocal Trump supporters to vocal Trump needs to be out of office supporters.

Not all Trumpers are the Trumpers from the south. **** those guys.

This is a great post. I think you’re absolutely right. Trumpism is Fascism, but the American version. Trump is smart in that he knows which buttons to push and which nerves to hit. He knows that demonizing Jews and Catholics wouldn’t fly here. But he knows that demonizing people of color and Muslims does. He knows that there’s a perception that “real America” isn’t the cities and urban centers, but the rural areas. He knows there’s great fear and paranoia about taxes, the media, socialism, and gun regulation. So he stays on message, keeping his base angry.

So yes, I think it was either Tim Snyder or Robert Paxton who taught that Fascism is most effective when it is modified to fit the signs, symbols, of needs to every particular country. The swastica doesn’t work here. But demonizing people of color and wrapping ourselves with the Bible and flag certainly does.

So because I see Trump for who he is I have something against conservatism? What is a conservative these days?

I don’t think any republican could actually define this right now. Conservativism for repubs right now means agreeing with whatever trump says at the moment.
