Trib Article: Hayward and Burks make quick connection

He did a good job against bigger PGs and even some SGs like Brandon Roy, but the quick ones ate him alive.

The point is the NBA makes it impossible to guard on the perimeter without help. No one in the world is going to be able to contain a player like Derrick Rose without help defense.

We'll really make a step in the right direction when everyone here realizes that Mr. Stern has made it illegal for PGs to play any defense. People complaining about how a PG is a bad defender is pointless.

Not completely. There are PGs who are better than others. Just watch Steve Nash play D, then watch Rondo. They are both have trouble stop penetration off the pick n' roll, but the man defense is completely different.

1. Sorry for the hyperbole. The NBA has made it close to impossible to individually guard a perimeter player with a quick first step.
2. I'm not sure about '10-'11, but for most of Deron's tenure with the Jazz, he was a very good defender. Either way, Derrick Rose couldn't stop Derrick Rose, even if the guy put any real effort into his defense.

Nash can play just as good of defense on Rondo as Rondo can play on Nash. Obviously Rondo is a better man v man defender. So given that Nash is a pretty cerebral player he would never go 1v1 against him, but just run PnR after PnR, and Rondo won't be able to stop him.

1v1 a better defensive PG would be ideal. 5v5 I'd take a better offensive PG every day of the week.

I wasn't talking about them playing against each other or anything of that nature. I was just saying there are differences between PGs level of defense. Somebody said earlier that is nearly impossible for PG's to be good defender, or shut the opposing PG down. I agreed, but there are PGs who make things tougher than others. I was just comparing opposite ends of the spectrum on the defensive level's of PGs.

There were times when Deron looked like a shutdown defender, that Portland comeback on National tv when he guarded Brandon Roy late in the game at some key moments comes to mind, and at other times he seems to move laterally as quick as boozer.

He did have that ankle sprain two years ago that made him a bit slower.

DeRon is a bigger PG. He could guard a Roy or Andre Miller or a bigger, slower player BUT one on one most no one can guard a Rose or Paul. They are just too quick.

If you look at the touted best Defensive PG's in the league

Rondo = KG
Rose = Noah

I even remember J. Nelson getting some pub a few years ago = Dwight

Without an interior presence no PG will be a good defender but then you have players like Nash, Kidd, ect. that have learned which way to shadow players - force them into crowds with good team defense. We had Boozer yelling - Yours or Pick after the fact which didnt help Deron.

Harris in my opinion is a decient defensive player and could be good against many of the PGs in the league with a good interior defensive presence.

What? You are an idiot. How many 6'6 college SG made the transition to PG in the NBA? Huh? Burks is not the 1st tall SG who can dribble and pass. If it was as easy as you say it is to take advantage over smaller players why haven't other players made the transition?

Your the idiot as reading many of your post have shown. If Burks height at 6' 6" is to tall for a point guard why was the greatest point guard in history Magic Johnson 6' 9" dumb ***, and Magic could play all 5 positions when he needed to. Good thing Magic's coaches never told him he is too tall to play point guard.

And where did I say it was easy? If I thought it was easy to transition to point guard, I wouldn't have said several years down the road. Reading other post on here it looks like your saying Burks could not play point guard because of his defense was completely shot down as well. I still like the thought of having a height advantage at both point guard and shooting guard, and I think O'Conner is thinking along those lines as well. Just because someone does not agree with you is no reason to start the name calling crap, but I can respond in kind. And doufus I will put my coaching experience and knowledge of the game up against yours any time.
