The NBA has a ratings problem

I mean sure...but there’s illegal streams to NFL games too and NFL ratings are up while NBA ratings have dropped significantly. Either way there are less people watching and it will impact revenue. As for the China deal, that’s fine, it may be more, may not be after the issues, but it’s still not going to be anywhere near the $24.5 billion the US contract is/was. With the rating drops NBA revenue will take a hit when the media companies come to renew their contract to broadcast the games.
NFL has far fewer games and a far larger percentage of them broadcast on either network TV or basic cable compared to NBA.

merch sales and other types of revenue are going to go up more than you're giving credit for. The NBA will find a way to make all the money it needs. There is not a problem.

The TV money is the largest revenue source by far. It’s enough to cover every NBA salary and more. The fact remains they are down and have been trending down quite a bit for quite a while lol. Like it’s making the NBA uncomfortable enough they’re grasping at straws looking at several different options. The companies with that $24.5 billion bill aren’t happy with the ratings I can assure you that. I don’t know why some of you think it doesn’t matter it does. Of course they’ll still make lots of money but the popularity of the NBA could be so much more if it wasn’t the way it was. “Merch sales and other stuff” don’t touch TV revenue lol.

This just popped up as a suggested video for me so I figured I’d link it. It’s pretty good. One F word around 6:25 mark.

I have absolutely no idea why I still watch the ****ing pile of **** the NBA is. Being a fan of a team is ****ing self inflicted torture.

I say this every year. If it weren’t for the Jazz I wouldn’t watch.

I like March madness a lot more than the NBA playoffs. And I think it would be awesome to see the NBA do the playoffs like that. Lose one and your done. But then officiating would be even worse. So there is that.

It’s just so predictable year in and year out. And the league allowing super teams doesn’t make it very competitive. Sure it’s great if ur a fan of a super team, but it takes away the idea of hard work and earning it. There isn’t a sense of accomplishment in the NBA to fans like me. It’s like a spoiled brat who gets what he wants. Participation trophy.

Seeing the nationals win the World Series shows that baseball has that unknown competition that people crave. The best player in baseball Mike Trout is on one of the leagues worst teams. But you don’t see them changing the game to benefit him and the team he is on.

The NBA put their money on the player. And fans are tired of it. They see the drama as just that. Drama. There is no more sense of a team game. It’s a “players” game now. And the NBA is feeling the affects of that.

It's easy to fix the NBA. I've said it for years, a true hard salary cap. 1 franchise tag per team per year.
Fix the officials. Put 4 officials on the floor, make the refs aware of what an actual travel is, calling a moving screen, the block-charge, palming the ball. Ect.
You ask ANY hardcore fan who isn't biased if the nba is rigged for stars and large markets and they'll tell you of course it is.

You keep equating NBA popularity to their TV ratings. That's why we're telling you that the NBA doesn't have a popularity problem even if they do have a U.S. market TV ratings problem.

The world is changing. People in the U.S. are not watching TV the way they were 10 years ago. Especially when it comes to needing a traditional cable TV subscription with a sports package addon vs just watching a free stream.

Okay cool, when the largest form of revenue big enough to cover every NBA salary isn’t based on TV and it’s ratings let me know. Until then, you’re wrong.

This. There’s not much incentive to watch a league that’s player constantly lecture their customers, create all types of drama and seem like ungrateful, spoiled assholes...at least a lot of the biggest stars which is what they’re selling. You can like or hate the opinion but the NBA is the league of spoiled brats and entitled attitudes that don’t have the respect for their customers that they should.

I'm not wrong about then not having a popularity problem.

What is my thread about?....The implications of ratings have the biggest impact financially and that’s the most important part of any business. More people buying a jersey isn’t equaling the giant money attached to TV and the ratings that come with. Ticket sells don’t even come close. The NBA is popular no doubt, but ratings are still the most valuable indication of interest level as well as actual dollar returns and they’ve slipped significantly.

So stop equating U.S. tv ratings with the popularity of the NBA and we're in agreement.
