I still don't understand how you guys don't think that the 9'ers are seeing Kaeper as the QB of the future. They used a high draft pick on him with the intentions of having him as their starter down the road. If they didn't and are positioning themselves in the Luck sweepstakes then there is no way they would have went QB and stuck with what they had last year.

There is zero chance that having drafted Kaep would prevent them from drafting Luck if they end up with the #1. He's just too good a QB prospect, and Harbaugh was his coach. I doubt they actually want to lose on purpose, my earlier comment was a dig on that QB situation. You gotta make a decision and get behind your guy.

I agree that they wouldn't pass on luck but there is no way they get the #1 pick either. Too many bad bad teams that are worse off than the 49ers. I guess i just read it as they would fail on purpose to get luck (Or thought I read). If that was the plan they wouldn't have drafted Kaeper..


On a side note.. I've been told that Kaeper is my twin from another mother since he is about 5 inches taller and about 70 lbs heavier. I guess I can see some of what people say.

Not a man crush but simply stating the obvious. They wouldnt have used a high draft pick on a back up... they used it as they see him as the QB of the future hopefully for them.

Kaep has some drawbacks, mainly in his release and footwork. But he has great intangibles, height, athleticism and a legit NFL arm. There is a lot to like about him. There are only 3 guys in Div I history to throw and run for 20 tds in a season. Tebow, Newton and Kaep. He is the only player in Div I history to throw for 10k and run for 4k over his career. There are no guarantees but if he puts in the work on his feet he could be great.

Besides all that, I like him for beating Donkey State. That was awesome.

Granted Tebow is the only one of the 3 to play in the NFL as of yet, but given his struggles so far I fail to see where Kaep is in good company. My hunch on Newton is that he'll be an exciting player to watch, yet a pretty ineffective NFL QB. Maybe these guys will suprise me, but I don't see any of the 3 as a viable long-term answer at the QB position.

Out of the top 10 QB's in the NFL, who is really an elite athlete by athletic standards? It's probably the least important factor in QB success.

1. Decision Making
2. Accuracy
3. Leadership
4. Arm Strength
5. Pocket Awareness

Vick drives DCs crazy with his ability to move. It effectively nullifies a great deal of their pass rush. It makes a huge difference. It's why Locker was drafted where he was. This is why guys like Young, Newton and Tebow get drafted so high.

If you hit on one of these players your offense goes into god mode. It's a good gamble. Kaep hasn't been in a real offense so he has a lot of work to put in aside from correcting his release and getting consistent with his feet. But he reportedly has the intangibles and is a hard worker.

Looking back at that draft the 9ers must really like him because they had their pick of anyone not named Newton in the 1st.

Just curious, does an offense going into "God Mode" with an atheletic QB mean the same thing as: Exciting offense to watch, that never wins a Super Bowl?

I know times are changing, but as of right now you still win Super Bowls with pocket passers. Peyton and Eli Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Ben Rapelesberger and Aaron Rodgers being the most recent examples. Hell, Steve Young and John Elway didn't win SB's until they were older and relying less on scrambling ability and more their pocket savy.

While having a Mike Vick may be a nightmare for opposing DC's, it also puts your QB in constant trouble of missing time due to injuries. Linebackers in 2011 are 6'5", 250lbs and run a 40 yard dash in 4.6 seconds. It's ungodly how big and fast defenders are getting and that equals extreme damage for guys like Vick, Locker, etc.

If I was an NFL GM, I wouldn't even look at the Vick-type of QB. Give me a smart pocket passer with a rocket arm and I'll depend on my WR's and RB's to be my explosive playmakers.

Ben R. Has elite physical characteristics which allow him to shrug off tacklers. His ability to extend plays is what makes him so dangerous. Steve Young didn't take half his career to get good, he just was stuck behind Montana. Elway was an elite QB before he won the SB. Favre had very good mobility and all these guys could throw on the run. None of them are very good examples of strict pocket passers.

Yes, LBs are fast and hit hard. That is why it's important to be able to elude them. Drew Bledsoe is a perfect example of a rocket-armed pocket passer. He got hurt. So do a lot of guys. Being able to move doesn't make you more injury prone. Vick broke a rib diving for a TD last year IIRC. But QBs get hurt all the time taking hits in the pocket just after a throw or taking a nasty sack. FYI defensive linemen hit pretty hard too.

Now, I'll grant you that a lot of these running QBs don't pan out due to the game being so easy for them in high school/college. If they aren't willing to learn footwork and fundamentals, reading coverages etc. they won't be that good in a typical NFL offense. But when they do you get guys like Vick who are extremely difficult to deal with. There has been kind of a long string of these types of players washing out so I can see why people don't believe they are good prospects. It's kind of like European players in the NBA. We're definitely due for the next big one, who could easily be Newton, Locker or Kaep. Tebow looks like a lost cause.

IMO the Eagles are doing the smart thing backing Vick up with another elite scrambler. This way the offense doesn't change as much when he misses some time.

Not to mention burns out an offensive line that has to spend 12-15 seconds every play blocking while Vick runs from sideline to sideline.
