2020 NBA trade deadline discussion

When I read that I had visions of a DL press conference... I know JZ is the GM now but I’m not as familiar with his voice and such... in this press conference DL talks about being aggressive and how we had a lot of traction in the buyout market but it never materialized the way we wanted (will mention Joe Johnson’s buyout and how we signed him the next year). Will take some questions on why we didn’t move Dante and will mention how much progress he’s making in rehab (I mean it’s going to happen right?). Will mention how a first round exit to the Rockets is not our goal and how we will push forward and get over the hump next year.
"Yeah, sure. That's a fair question. And of course we have to look at ourselves and hold ourselves accountable -- that's part of the position and, hey, it comes with the territory of what we do. But when we look at what was going on in the league, the moves that were made, the moves that weren't made, the moves that were almost made -- or should I say rumored to be made -- when we look at all of that, and then we look at our current group -- guys we constructed a roster around, guys who play hard, guys who come to work every day not focused on the paycheck, guys who are dedicated to themselves and other -- guys who are true professionals in every sense of the word -- we take a look at those guys and we have to ask ourselves -- myself, Justin, David Morway, Quin, the Miller family, etc. -- we have to ask ourselves what can we do to take this team from where it's at and move it forward. That becomes the pressing question. And there are always many late nights. We discuss things. Heck, just the other day Justin and David got into a big discussion over Chinese food over something one of our video specialists who's been with us for the season had noticed on the way teams are defending us coming out of high screens, you know things like that where these guys are living and breathing the game, we're faced with a number of decisions that will affect the course of this franchise years down the road. So we look at the history of what makes Jazz basketball, dating back to Frank Layden and Sam Battistone, and Sam's Pancake shop... you know, a lot of people don't really know this, but Sam used to sell a pancake at Sambo's called the big cheese. Now it didn't really have cheese in it, but that kind of gives you some kind of measure of knowing who that guy was. Carry that forward and the great leadership we have under the Miller family, myself having the huge blessing of being able to learn under Kevin O'Connor, and to have so many great minds in the office, that we took a look at where we were at, we surveyed the landscape, and yeah we had been offered some very interesting names -- some guys that there may have been a lot of excitement for -- but when we continued to look at ourselves, our identity, what made our style of play unique, and we look at the chemistry and changes that happened this offseason -- and it was a big change, this wasn't small -- when we take a look at all these variables and when we ask ourselves those questions, we realized as a group -- at that time -- that we felt where we were at that it was only fair to this group of guys to give them everything they needed to succeed and we didn't want to prematurely... you know.. prematurely make changes and compromise ourselves just because we weren't really serious about investing the time that's required to build a team of a championship caliber, like a San Antonio, per se, and I genuinely believe that, as you look at these guys, that it's a huge testament to who these guys are -- not just as players but as people -- to their dedication, to their hard work, to them really coming in every day and buying in to Quin's system. We just felt that this was the best we could do for these guys and a great opportunity not just for the franchise but also for the city of Salt Lake and the whole state. These are great guys and I'm privileged to be among them."

I hope if we don't make any moves, the FO just says "we're gonna ride with who we came with and we believe these guys will put it together." And not "well we tried to make moves and couldn't get it done."

Funny thing is when he says it with his cadence and accent I believe he said something significant. there is a lot of money out there for guys that can string these kinds of word salads together.

Nice work.

A guy I had hoped would get cut that I would have interest in is Christian Wood in Detroit. I think there have been maturity issues (think Whiteside when he was bouncing around). The dude is big, athletic, and has added some skill... can play 4/5 and might add a body to throw at AD in the playoffs.

He's been quite good in Detroit this year, but they don't have his full bird rights...not sure how well he functions on a high performing team... not sure how invested they are in keeping him or where that team is headed long-term. The PG position has been a rough spot for years... maybe we swap exum for Snell and Wood... saves them some money and gets them someone more interesting than Tony Snell. I can't imagine they'd part with him at this point and I'm sure we'd have to add a second or they might have interest in one of our prospects... If Wood continues his strong play I could see him getting MLE type money this offseason... if they retain Drummond they would have like $70M tied up in their frontcourt already.

Let's be honest boys. The Jazz will not trade anyone away. They might pick up some waived peeps but they're definitely not going to move Conley when DL has had his eyes on him for years

I don’t know who this Christian Wood guy is but I look at his numbers and I like them. What would we have to trade for him? Just get @Handlogten's Heros in here talking about Wood, his length, his girth, and his ability to penetrate and I think we should be good.

He has long limbs and is really bouncy... I'm not sure he's got Jazz DNA but if we wanted to try out a bad boy he might be worth the experiment. He's a freak athlete can shoot it a little too. He's been around town a lot because he has talent and some maturity issues.

6'10 with a 7'3 wingspan... he can handle the ball a bit... his pick and roll finishing stats will cause your eyes to roll to the back of your head... thinking about him and Ingles together has me all sorts of excited.

Wood seems rock solid.

I don't know what Detroit would want... we can save them a little money with Exum for Snell... maybe Niang and some seconds. He is playing a meaningful role for them right now and they are 1 game out of the playoffs. I'm not sure they would let him go at this point in the season. If they get closer to the deadline and don't think they will keep him they might take a second for him. He's a minimum guy so salary matching is pretty easy.

Do you think we could insert some of our Jazz DNA into him?

I think Quin could try... just can prematurely yank him out... gotta leave him in there to see if he can give us what we need.
