Praise for Mudiay

Royce is the front office's diamond in the rough.

They're not giving him up.

I didn't say they were. I just listed what I believe the priorities should be.

I also do not believe the front office would pass on a Kevin Love type player to keep Royce. At least I hope they wouldn't. If they could add a big the caliber of say Bogie-light with size, rebounding and D, with backup 5 capabilities, then they would need to do that and I think they know it.

But that said, the odds of Conley opting out are very damn slim. Unless he had another gig lined up well and of time he would be dumb to leave that amount of money on the table.

If Conley opts out then priority #1 would be going and getting a stretchy big with reasonable to good defense and rebounding to be able to play with gobert in big lineups or back him up.

Priority #1a would be retain Royce. But if getting the right stretchy big cost us Royce it has to be considered.

Hell even if Conley doesn't opt out getting a big to backup/ play alongside gobert is still priority #1.

If Conley opted out we'd have a good amount of cap space. We'd need to waive JC's cap hold to use a chunk of it, but we could still retain him... just at a lower number than his cap hold. Conley opting out could end up being a good scenario for us... I'm honestly not worried about that. The Conley truthers will call me an idiot for suggesting it... but his value is primarily on offense and... when he comes back he'd be the guy with the lowest TS% among our rotation players... and it's not really close. It isn't a case of just a bad first few games either... He's had 7 games out of 22 where he's shot over league average (55% TS%). Our other guards are averaging 55% or better. He's had some big smoking hot games... he looked like his game was making the adjustments to fit better prior to getting hurt, but I don't think we are getting the Mike Conley from last year and I think we got duped a bit. I get it, career averages over 12 years tell us he will be better yada yada yada. It will be a downgrade defensively in the starting unit... He needs to be a lot better when he comes back or it will absolutely hurt the team.

When you watched this game and Mudiay and JC are bullying smaller guards down low it reminded me of what Fox did to Mike early in the season... I think Conley makes us better overall, but these are issues we will end up having by going smaller... he will need to make up for that by being really good or making others really good... I'm just not sure he will.

Hot take that isn't that hot... Royce is a better player for a team that wants to win in the playoffs than Kevin Love is... I don't think its all that close either.

To retain Mudiay we will have to use part of our MLE next year or the BAE... we don't have bird rights on him because he signed a one year deal. I think we should try to retain him, but if you have Conley, DM, and you keep JC then you may need to allocate resources elsewhere.

You keep one of Mudiay or Clarkson, and in my mind that's an easy call. The Jazz have no shortage of ballhandlers or playmakers, yet they have one sure-fire rotational big.

At the same time, I can still see Mudiay's market being tepid given the market this offseason. Roll out the BAE and make the second year a player option if that's possible. That's best-case scenario in my mind.

I don’t think he gets much more than BAE... if he continues to play well and if he gets even better (I honestly am not sure he can) then he could be out of the price range.

If we are completely healthy I’m not sure how Mudiay gets more than 4-6 minutes... he would allow you to get DM and Conley some nights off though. He’s played so well.

It’s wild how much depth we have at the guard spots and have no one besides Gobert that resembles a legit big. I was really trending towards the Horford thing but that ain’t happening now.

IDK... he gets 16-17 minutes a night right now... Conley likely gets 25-30 minutes when he's healthy... DM can give up a few, Niang only plays 14 minutes a night... Royce is probably already on the lower side of his range minutes wise. Joe and DM could likely give up 1-2 minutes a night.

I don't see more than 5-8 minutes for Mudiay when healthy... even if you took Niang out of the rotation, which I don't think they would do. He can't play small ball 5... like that isn't an option at all.

We are aware... which is why we discussed using BAE or MLE... I'm not sure someone likes him enough to pay him more than that, but why would we do it if we have Conley, DM, Ingles, JC? We have other needs.

So if he isn't coming back do we use him in a trade when Conley is healthy? He's likely out of the rotation or damn close to it. He's quite the feel good story and Jazz love their projects. I get the feeling he's made a good impression on the front office and coaching staff. Just keep him as injury insurance and then let him walk?

I dont think it's a certainty he's out of the rotation. You need depth as well. You dont have to trade everyone on your roster who isnt going to be there next year.

Mudiay won't be out of the rotation when Conley comes back. He's one of our 8 best players. Quin will find ways to play our best.
