How many all stars each year?

I probably didn't watch the all star game last year, but just found this:

Were there seriously 27 all star players chosen last year??? If so, Rudy's lack of invite was even more criminal than I had thought. Like, UNBELIEVABLY criminal. And Mitchell should absolutely be selected this year.

I realize the exact number fluctuates a bit each year due to injuries, but I wonder what the average number of all star players is from year to year.
 
I actually don't understand the "archaic" rules of the NBA still exist. The game has changed significantly even in the last 10 (?) years. Why do we have conferences? Why aren't we taking the top 16 teams to the playoffs? Why aren't all-stars selected for that...being an all-star (instead of stupid fan voting. Of course California with 10x the population will outvote people from Utah)? Should a team in deadlast have an all-star (my answer is no).

I just don't understand why aren't just the 1-3 selections aren't just the all-stars? If they want to do fan voted games, do it some other way than "all-star" voting because you have people like Fall, Alex, and Howard higher than players that are REALLY all-stars

Is that all selections or just the starters? I thought the coach's vote came later...?

Both will make it.

LeBron, AD, Jokic, DM, Rudy, Harden, Westbrook, Kawhi, PG, Luka are all basically locks at this point imo. With CP3, Dame, Booker, KAT, Ingram fighting for the last two spots. I'd say CP3 and Dame probably get in.

this. most allstars on the east won't even make to the top 20 list on the west. Derozan, a starter at east allstar two seasons ago, didn't even make to the west allstar roster last season. the talent disparity is just ridiculous.
 
Are we getting two "legacy" all stars this season? My guess is that they would love to put Vinsanity in the game. Anyone else?

Joe Johnson would have been cool, but the Pistons cut him. They'd probably go with Melo.

Last year was kind of a fluke, when they had 2 players, one in each conference, who were first ballot hall-of-famers, champions, perennial-all-stars, who had both announced they were retiring at the end of the season. And, except for a weird brief period, they also played their entire careers for one franchise. It was kind of a perfect storm.
 
If the Jazz stay in the 2 or 3 seed there’s zero reason both Donovan and Rudy shouldn’t make it.

That's right, just starters. Reserves are announced a week later on 31st. But I presume the coaches cast their votes earlier than that. So Utah now should keep winning games for another week to maximize their chances of sending two stars to the ASG.
