Buyout Options

Oh Spellman being out there is unexpected. He’s an @infection favorite from the draft. Probably not someone the jazz would consider as he’s too unproven. I’d give him a call this offseason though.

Not picking up Spellman is going to be dumber than not getting Bogut and DWill when we were rolling with Diaw and Mack.

Spellman probably goes to Houston.

More importantly, I don’t think Omari ever calls DL, so it’s not a possibility.

I’m not sure why he’s even seeking a buyout or waiver... he has another year left in his deal. I just report what I hear.

It's funny about the "unproven" comment, because that sounds spot on for what they'd say and what the talking heads would reassure us with, as if the guys he'd be replacing are somehow proven. He could honestly replace both backup 4 and 5 guys, leaving just spot minutes to be filled, that you could give to Mudiay. Dude can rebound, defend, and shoot the long ball. But whiffing is a classic move. We waived Stanton Kidd to grab Morgan. We waived Jeff Green to get Rayjon Tucker. Heaven forbid we waive NWG for someone who would actually be in the rotation.

I think the play Minny is trying to do here is to waive him and hope someone claims him... then they drop under the tax... Heat did it last year with McGruder. I’m not sure we have any exceptions that would allow us to claim him... believe you either need to have cap space or a trade exception or a cap exception.

We honestly just need to play Morgan and Brantley... its kind of dumb that we sit here saying we need a 4/5 with some heft/athleticism that can do dirty work and we have these two mystery boxes that might have the solution we are looking for. Give those guys some run for hells sake. Niang aint going nowhere... if they fail you can pivot back to him. If Jarrell plays well waive NWG and convert his deal this year.

Is it too late to trade for a player exception? Can the Jazz give a 2nd to get an exception from another team?

You don’t really obtain exceptions. They come from sending out more salary in a deal than you’re taking back.

No... I think maybe he could get bought out knowing that he has a minimum offer someone else and they might avoid the tax that way. I don't think we can actually get in on this conversation if they release him I think its because they know another team will claim him... then they drop under the tax and can sign someone to the minimum deal with a team option for next year. Otherwise I think they keep him and pay the tax... it isn't much and they aren't in danger of being repeaters right now.

If Omari Spellman gets waived by the Wolves (stupid move) Utah should snatch him up. Good size for PF, good 3pt, clutch shooter. Per 36, he would be a 15/9 guy with nearly 40% from 3. I think he could be the young PF/ Stretch 5 that Utah is looking for.

But would the FO recognize that?

Answer: no.

If he's that good he'll be picked up before we ever get a chance

Latest word on Spellman I've seen is that Wolves now intend to keep him and play send him to the G-League for a while. Like so many of the names we've been discussing, I don't think he'd have moved the meter much at all for us.

Basically this is our squad. It's fine... it ain't a contender.

Had we kept Rubio, Favors and Crowder, and added Clarkson and Bojan we would have been one heck of a team to beat! Why was that not possible? Clarkson and Bojan would have given us the outside shooting we needed....and Rubio would have run the team beautifully, Favors and Crowder would have given us the inside presence to dominate with Rudy on board.

By the way, ESPN is giving us NO props whatsoever! We'd have to win 20 games in a row for them to even acknowledge we are in the League!

I think DL's obsession with Dante and failure to accept his mistake has been his biggest failure, and led him into more mistakes. The problem with Rubio here was that Quin wanted him to do things he wasn't good at, namely shooting. I think Ricky could've been good off the bench to control the offense and slow things down. He would've been a good antidote to those runs that occur against us. But Quin didn't want to change the style of play when Rubio was in the game.
