What's new

my last dumb phone

And you're still buying calendars, pens and paper, so your setup isn't free either. Plus, you're still paying a phone bill every month (or your job is) so your setup probably isn't all that much cheaper than mine.

How much was your phone? How much are your monthly phone charges? (Serious questions here, as I'm considering getting a smart phone in the not-so-distant future.)

To keep it relevant: Moe, I've still got a dumb phone! Not even a camera. And I've sent 1 text message in the phone's history.

The phone is $200 with a contract, or $450 without a contract. The family plan is $130 for the first 2 lines, and $20 for each additional line. Each Evo also requires a $10 per month fee for the 4G. That includes unlimited data, text messages, MMS, GPS, and Sprint TV. It also includes unlimited calls to and from any cell phone (no matter what company they are with), 1500 anytime minutes to share, and nights and weekends start at 7:00 pm. Just about every company out there gets some king of employee discount too, and that amount varies from company to company.

I have an iPhone 4 on the way but if I'm not blown out of the water in the first few days I'm going to take it back, finish my contract with my 3G (until January '11) and get an EVO. When I ordered the phone I just assumed it would be 4G ready when the network launched. Pathetic. FaceTime only working with other iPhone 4's and requiring a WiFi connection is also a joke.

Hey, Salty, looks like this is going to happen for me. Do you have any experience with other smart phones? I.e., how does the Evo compare to something like the Droid or the Droid X?

I may be on the market for a not dumb phone soon. What provider and phone do you guys suggest for the SLC area?

I'm not Salty, but I can chime in with some feedback on this. I own the Droid. It would be on a lower level than the Evo and Droid X, as it came out last year. I would say the Evo and Droid X are pretty comparable in terms of what they have on the inside. About the only edge I can think for the Evo is its front facing camera. The Droid X does not have one. I think either one would be a great choice, and better than the original Droid,. Although while the Droid is less powerful and speedy, it does have a physical Qwerty. If you really want a physical Qwerty, you might want to wait a month or two for the Droid 2. It is supposed to have a far better keyboard than the original Droid.

I think Katie pretty much nailed it. The Evo and Droid X are the 2 hands down best phones right now. And no, they don't drop calls if you hold them a certain way, and you don't need a case in order to prevent dropped calls. I will take it a step further though and say not only does the Evo have the front facing camera, but the plans are also cheaper than the Droid X plans. Plus, you get unlimited data with the Evo. Verizon is rumored to be announcing tiered data plans that mimic AT&T's. And then there's the 4G that the Evo has.

If you want a keyboard, don't wait for the Droid 2, wait for the Samsung Galaxy S on Sprint (called the Epic). It will have a keyboard, front facing camera, and 4G. It should be out in mid to late August. If you don't care about a keyboard and/or don't want to wait, the Evo is the best phone on the market right now. The Doid X is pretty close to it, but it doesn't have the front camera or 4G.

The Droid is old though, I wouldn't even consider it right now. It'd be like buying a computer that was already old and outdated. If you want to go with Verizon then it comes down to Droid X for no keyboard, wait for the Droid 2 (late August) if you want a keyboard.

Sprint's 4G is the best in the nation at the moment. T-Mobile's is right behind it, but they don't have HSPA+ in the SLC area yet. Verizon will be launching 4G soon, but they haven't said which cities will get it yet- only that 30 cities will get it in November. No word on cost either, or if it will be unlimited or not like Sprint's.

So in short, if you don't care about a keyboard, the Evo 4G on Sprint. If you want a keyboard, the Epic on Sprint in a few weeks.

T-mobile is supposedly announcing some new and awesome phone in the next couple weeks, but they don't have the HSPA+ data (which is supposed to compete with Sprint's 4G) in SLC yet. And that's really too bad, because T-Mobile has great customer service and really cheap prices.

4G is pretty awesome. It's much, MUCH, faster than 3G, plus you can talk on the phone whle you use data. When the other carriers get 4G, then it will be worth comparing them. But right now Sprint is the only one with 4G in SLC, so there is no comparison. And it doesn't hurt that Sprint is cheaper than AT&T and Verizon (with free roaming on Verizon's network in case you buy into those coverage commercials).

how far south does Sprint's 4G network go? (I live in Orem; having 4G in SLC would not help me much.)

I don't really go down there very often, so I don't know from experience, but here's the map. The blue is 4G, orange is 3G:

me too. and text. i probably text as much as I call, it's less intrusive.

This phone doesn't even have games. My last two phones had games. I really didn't play 'em much though.
I'm old school all the way. Cell phone is a pre-pay and kept in the car for emergencies. I don't want work to reach me once I'm gone. If I'm at the grocery store, I have the balls to know what spaghetti sauce to get without calling home.

I mean, how did people survive 20 years ago?

With that attitude, why do you have a computer?

I have an iphone 3Gs and it's probably the best phone out there. You can send pictures with it. Just saying.

I feel I should point out that this thread has been up for 36 hours - ish and you've had one person agree. Just sayin'

And I just joined the club...so moevillini, gameface and me are in.

Right now I have to have a landline. No choice because we live next to a hill and can't get decent reception (doesn't matter which provider, we've tried a few). But I used to live in LA and still didn't prefer cell phones. Like I said, I have one for emergencies. But few people have my number. If I'm not at work, at home or on my way to see you, I probably don't want or need to be talking/texting.

I'm end up paying about $8/mth for the minutes I use (I can get by with a $100 refill once a year). Land line is $100/mth, but that includes unlimited LD and my DSL.

Plus, if there's an extensive power outage, a land-line with an old fashioned plug in the wall with a curly cord phone is the only one that's gonna work after a while. Cell phones are fine, but if you're on the phone much, you'll wear down the battery and you have no way to recharge it.

and thanks, Glass Eater - - you know what they say: two's company, and three's a party! So let's party!!! :-D

Well, no offense to gameface; I'm sure he's a nice enough guy.
But if you had a girlfriend as the third person and wanted to get togther for a party, well, I'm sure I'd have a hard time resisting an invite;-)

what line? I didn't think they're called lines with a cell phone.

what do they call it? I mean, in the old days we'd say "the line is busy" - - so now, is it "the tower is busy" or what? I mean, if you're being intellectually honest and all that....

Tmobile more or less decided to skip 3g so they could compete with 4g when it came out for cheaper prices. They did the bare minimum to compete the last few years. One really nice thing about t-mobile is you can buy a much nicer phone from a different country and pop your sim card in. I bought a really nice Nokia phone from Europe 5 years ago that did pretty much everything current smart phones do except that you could not use most the features since the network was way behind.
