Hey, Salty, looks like this is going to happen for me. Do you have any experience with other smart phones? I.e., how does the Evo compare to something like the Droid or the Droid X?
I think Katie pretty much nailed it. The Evo and Droid X are the 2 hands down best phones right now. And no, they don't drop calls if you hold them a certain way, and you don't need a case in order to prevent dropped calls. I will take it a step further though and say not only does the Evo have the front facing camera, but the plans are also cheaper than the Droid X plans. Plus, you get unlimited data with the Evo. Verizon is rumored to be announcing tiered data plans that mimic AT&T's. And then there's the 4G that the Evo has.
If you want a keyboard, don't wait for the Droid 2, wait for the Samsung Galaxy S on Sprint (called the Epic). It will have a keyboard, front facing camera, and 4G. It should be out in mid to late August. If you don't care about a keyboard and/or don't want to wait, the Evo is the best phone on the market right now. The Doid X is pretty close to it, but it doesn't have the front camera or 4G.
The Droid is old though, I wouldn't even consider it right now. It'd be like buying a computer that was already old and outdated. If you want to go with Verizon then it comes down to Droid X for no keyboard, wait for the Droid 2 (late August) if you want a keyboard.
I may be on the market for a not dumb phone soon. What provider and phone do you guys suggest for the SLC area?
Sprint's 4G is the best in the nation at the moment. T-Mobile's is right behind it, but they don't have HSPA+ in the SLC area yet. Verizon will be launching 4G soon, but they haven't said which cities will get it yet- only that 30 cities will get it in November. No word on cost either, or if it will be unlimited or not like Sprint's.
So in short, if you don't care about a keyboard, the Evo 4G on Sprint. If you want a keyboard, the Epic on Sprint in a few weeks.
T-mobile is supposedly announcing some new and awesome phone in the next couple weeks, but they don't have the HSPA+ data (which is supposed to compete with Sprint's 4G) in SLC yet. And that's really too bad, because T-Mobile has great customer service and really cheap prices.
4G is pretty awesome. It's much, MUCH, faster than 3G, plus you can talk on the phone whle you use data. When the other carriers get 4G, then it will be worth comparing them. But right now Sprint is the only one with 4G in SLC, so there is no comparison. And it doesn't hurt that Sprint is cheaper than AT&T and Verizon (with free roaming on Verizon's network in case you buy into those coverage commercials).
