The official "let's impeach Trump" thread

The idea that the AG is historically apolitical and nonpartisan is quaint but untrue. Plenty of democratic AGs were in the president's camp. Bobby Kennedy, Holder, Janet Reno, others.

Barr and Trump just do this in the open and take the idea to an extreme.

The issue that worries people isn’t bias. Everyone recognizes that no one is truly unbiased. The issue is how Barr is trampling the law in order to protect Trump. Using the DOJ to be Trump’s own enforcer agency is something the country has never seen before in an AG.

The AGs you listed never used the entire DOJ to investigate political rivals or thwart law enforcement like Barr is doing. He’s creating a means to destroy our democracy and create a dictator.

Trump is the biggest scam artist and it’s a shame that so many people believe that he’s putting American interests first. It will be a tough pill to swallow if he wins again.

Fake news he keeps claiming. What about the fake patriotism that he’s based his presidency on. I went from giving him a shot to actually despising the guy.

nah. Happens all the time. Reno swept the 1996 China DNC contributions issue under the rug. Was a much bigger deal than lewinski.

Nixon’s AG Mitchell covered up watergate, jailed for conspiracy and obstruction of justice. His wife Martha exposed the scandal.

Author James W. Hilty concludes that RFK "played an unusual combination of roles—campaign director, attorney general, executive overseer, controller of patronage, chief adviser, and brother protector" and that nobody before him had had such power.

The same Mitchell that was sent to prison for obstruction of justice? Doesn’t that actually defeat your point that Mitchell had bent the DOJ to his will?

I’m sorry, but what unethical or illegal activity are you accusing RFK of committing?

Are you saying that family members, friends, and donors shouldn’t serve in one’s cabinet? Sweet! Where can I sign this bill? I’m bigly supportive of campaign and administrative reform. Nepotism has no place in the appointment of cabinet positions or ambassadorships.

“Happens all the time” and refers back 24 years to an obscure case where Clinton was accused of using his White House telephone to help fund raise for Gore... what’s your definition of “all the time?”

And why do you think that’s worse than Clinton committing perjury?

My point is what I said, that the AG role has not historically been apolitical. They are taking care of the prez.

“There was a lot of White House control of the Justice Department during the Kennedy administration and I don’t think we saw very many liberal professors arguing against that,” Dershowitz told Breitbart News. “I have some information as well about the Obama administration – which will be disclosed in a lawsuit at some point, but I’m not prepared to disclose it now – about how President Obama personally asked the FBI to investigate somebody on behalf of George Soros, who was a close ally of his.”

Let's get psychotic about paint though. Yay team

Well, an AG is a political appointment, so there's that. Barr's "extreme", in Trump's case, is to put the president above the law. The Atlantic essay by Donald Ayer is excellent in laying out the argument that Barr is advocating a distinctly "un-American" idea. It's basically unfathomable to me that an AG could think such a thing. As Ayer put it, "The fundamental problem is that he does not believe in the central tenet of our system of government—that no person is above the law. In chilling terms, Barr’s own words make clear his long-held belief in the need for a virtually autocratic executive who is not constrained by countervailing powers within our government under the constitutional system of checks and balances".

Oh man, how we despised Mitchell, back in the day. During the May Day demonstrations in Washington, held over several days in May, 1971, he initiated the arrests of several thousand protestors, but the ACLU nailed him for it.

They put us in the enclosed outdoor practice facility of the Washington Redskins...

Dershowitz: That’s going to come out in a lawsuit in the near future, yeah. That is not unusual, people whisper to presidents all the time, presidents whisper to Justice Department all the time, it’s very common, it’s wrong whoever does it, but it’s common and we shouldn’t think that it’s unique to any particular president. I have in my possession the actual 302 form which documents this issue and it will at the right time come out, but I’m not free to disclose it now because it’s a case that’s not yet been filed.
