So anyone signed off the buyout market that we're being aggressive in has to be signed by March 1st to be eligible for the playoffs. So that gives us a day shy of two weeks. All the talking heads have been saying that though they don't expect the Jazz to make a trade, they don't think our current roster is our playoff roster. Time is ticking down and we'll see. But, I think this observation from SCS in another thread is quite pertinent to this discussion:

So I was deep diving some numbers.

The Lakers really live at the rim. They are 4th in the NBA in attempts at a distance of 5 feet or less and they are 1st in FG% from that distance at 67.3%.

Away from the rim they only shoot 39.1% on shots from 5-9 feet, 39.7% on shots from 10-14 feet, an abysmal 36.4% on shots from 15-19 feet, 40.4% on shots from 20-25 feet, and 34.2% from 25-29 feet. They tend to settle for 15-25 footers when they don't get to the rim too.

In other words they are very vulnerable if a team limits/takes away the rim.

I'm interested to see how this reliance on production at the rim works out for the Lakers in the playoffs when defenses tighten and buckets are harder to come by.

In theory, if the Jazz were to face the Lakers and the Jazz executed their defense the way it is designed to work they could cause problems for the Lakers. Because there's not a better rim protector in the league than Rudy Gobert.

No way we upset the apple cart. Being a good guy like NWG >>>>> winning.
This. Nothing of note is going to happen. We are what we are. They will play more Conley, more iso ball, less Ingles, less blender. I do not think we will go on the same kind of run we have after the ASB in the past 2 years. I'm predicting we'll be 5th again. Probably play Houston again.

You 've been drinking Shad's kool aid uh? :). Cheer up.

I am fully cheered. I also know what 20+ games with Conley have shown us already. I really hope I'm wrong but I just don't see it, unless Conley misses significant time again.

I hope you’re wrong. I predicted the 5th seed too before the season.

I really hope not. If I'm not mistaken, the last time we had HCA in the first round was when we were upset by the upcoming Dirk/Nash/Finley Mavericks in 2001. That's almost 20 years of not finishing in the top 4 of the conference. **** Calvin Booth.

We shall see. A sense of urgency in the regular season has not really been our strong suit the last 20 years.

I hope that changes.

It's crazy that those D-Will/Boozer/Memo teams never had home court in the first round.

I absolutely hope I'm wrong. I hope they integrate Conley seamlessly, and that Joe figures out how to play effectively with a reduced role and more off the ball and that the whole team learns to play off the inevitable iso ball and get good looks. But so far we just haven't seen it consistently with Conley starting. But I really hope I'm wrong.

"But... but... he's supposed to be our budget-friendly Deron Williams in the coming years. All it's going to take is patience and development, right?" -Jazz Front Office

He may come through solid in 10-12 minutes over a 5 game stretch in a couple years when we're depleted by injury. Stupid to be so short-sighted to hamstring us in the future just for one playoff run.

There are really only 3 candidates I can see getting bought out that aren't terrible:

- Harkless… would be great... he would have options... still not sure they do it unless he pushes for it.
- Tristan Thompson - Think it has like a 25% chance of happening in part because of his representation and the fact that he may get more next year through sign and trade.
- Demarre Carroll - There was the tweet that said he didn't want to waste away on the bench, but he has a multi year deal, so how much is he willing to give up? I'm not sure he's good, but I'd take a look if I was DL.

I think outside of a guy currently out of the league signing (udoh, Booker, Bogut) I think we are rolling with this roster... buzzer kinda sounded for us at the trade deadline.

If that last sentence is true, then this is like when the kid asks his dad if he can buy a drink at the stadium and dad says "nah, let's get a drink on the way home from the gas station!" Then dad passes the gas station. "Ah, ****, you know what... I don't think we can go tonight."

It's like that except the dad said that while knowing there is only one gas station in town and they are likely closed on the way home.

I think relying on the buyout market is way more dicey than trying to get a trade done.

But, I mean, there's still guys out there... Bogut, Noah, Ekpe. Really no reason we should be rolling with the same roster come March 1, yet we likely will be. We will be active in that market, though.

Pick up Bogut he still has game. If Gobert is hurt for any period Bradley isn’t goin to fill in like a good vet would Bradley will foiul out so we need some insurance Bogut has ties here and sees we have a great team

I think right now the only guy that is truly available is Noah... Not sure what the contract status of the CBA buys is... not sure when the Australian league ends.

It isn't the right move, but I do think we go into the postseason with this roster. Some of us know how that will play out, but it will be confirmed in the playoffs to the front office. Then they will hopefully address the issues in the offseason. Problem is when you are 6-12 months behind on changes that should be made then new ones will pop up and things will change... like the cartoon with the finger plugging up the holes in the damn.

I love this team... haven't given up on them, but I don't see them as a contender... the holes we have on our roster are fine if you aren't trying to contend. Like go ahead and develop TB and Niang if you aren't trying to reach the highest levels of NBA performance.

The front office doesn't have the sense of urgency that I'd expect from a team that thinks they can win now. Half our bench is G League guys for hells sake. That's fine... if you are trying to be a good playoff team... if you are trying to contend you need more depth and diverse pieces to help you play to certain matchups.
