Serious question, why are republicans so weird? Like seriously, why do they take it upon themselves to give experts the bird? Why do they have this need to defend trump and diminish this virus?

whether it be with election interference, Ukraine, climate change, and coronavirus, they seem to find this adolescent obsession to go against responsibility and expertise and give us all the bird.

From our elected officials, to Fox News, to our dumbest posters. You see this weekly play out. Why?

I’m getting increasingly concerned. Not just about the virus, but about her reaction of people right now. Relax and stop buying all the damn toilet paper!!

I put a 4. Was probably more like a 2-3 earlier today but a 50 year old woman died a half hour from here and I’m 44 myself. I’m not arrogant enough to think I’m impervious to this virus and think we could really be in for a rude awakening and around 20,000 cases in a week. Maybe 100,000 cases in two weeks.

italy has 25,000 cases, 300+ dying per day, and it hasn’t even peaked there yet. Their health care system is in flames, with beds in parking lots and with doctors needing to prioritize care to those who have a greater chance at living... meanwhile.

we are hundreds of cases ahead of Italy at the same stage they were at a few weeks ago, have a worse health care system, and people are doing this over the weekend:

Because exposing yourself to the virus is like totally owninthevirus as if it were al Qaeda.

I don’t think people recognize how crazy things are going to get in the next month.

sigh

Social isolation isn't about protecting the nice old man you see down the street, I mean not just that, rather it's about "herd immunity" more or less. It's about breaking the chain of infection to protect those most vulnerable that you might not even know you affected.

Yikes

it’s so infectious that now health care providers are getting sick:

We are going to see the collapse of our health care system in many parts of our country in the coming weeks.

Correct

Being calm and rational is now ignorant? Also, loud? Not hardly, just responding to fellow Jazz fans quoting me. I'd expect you would do the same.
There are a couple of different reasons why you won’t catch me having to repeat the same ignorant phrases over and over, bud.

You’ve revealed enough about your understanding of health, bodies, viruses, etc. You’ve been thoroughly revealed as a clown; and this site can’t leave clowns alone. Don’t let the attention flatter you.

I think there are probably at least two strains of this virus, with one of them being much worse than the other. One is like a bad case of the flu, and the other is really life-threatening. There's a stark difference between what is happening in Iran and Italy vs. what has happened in Singapore and Taiwan. I don't think the difference can be explained by testing, containment or treatment methodology.

In the absence of a reliable vaccine, social distancing is the primary remedy, and it looks like the U.S. is serious about it. The economic and social consequences may be felt for a long time.
The evidence doesn’t currently support your two-strain theory.

I just read that half of coronavirus patients in intensive care in Netherlands and France is under the age of 50.

If kids were the high risk demo I think people would be taking this a little more seriously.

that’s a misunderstanding. Young people are suffering and dying from this too because there is no immunity to this new virus. Once our hospitals are overwhelmed, young people who could receive treatment today might be neglected.

Good post. I think many could benefit by getting informed in these issues. I don’t know if the media here is doing a poor job or what? But our culture and people seem overwhelmingly ignorant. But if we go outside of our media and see what foreign media and doctors on twitter are reporting, this is a major cause for concern

the economic bomb alone is making 2008 look like nothing.
I voted 10. This is already horrifically bad and will only get worse over the next month.

I put a 6. That doesn’t adequately cover how I feel, and neither do the ones above or below it. But also hard to compare because people who seem more worried about it than I am rated it lower. I’ve had a lot of thoughts and feelings on this that are tl;dr and have held off from posting. But in any case, it seems people are conflating the fomentation of fear and taking it seriously. It’s inducing a lot of anxiety for a lot of people. There’s certainly nothing wrong with anxiety — it’s a healthy driver for change. But, like anything else, it eventually provides diminishing returns and eventually the curve turns counterproductive.

As a thought exercise, this is not meant to suggest anything one way or the other, but more about helping anyone organize many different thoughts and bring clarity, but ask yourself where you see this being in a week. As yourself what the worst-case-scenario is, from your view, and what the best-case-scenario is. Ask yourself what is most likely. In a week, assess where things are at. It’s easy to look at these things in hindsight and, with how many conflicting thoughts each of us may possess, believe that we adequately captured things when in reality we were more uncertain in those moments than hindsight has us believe. So deliberately do this, then allow yourself to recalibrate, and make the assessment for the next week. This isn’t a suggestion for anyone to be “proven wrong,” on either side, but more about being able to settle disparate thoughts and try to help be more self-aware of our appraisals.

correct. The difference is Taiwan and Singapore and Italy and here is how they reacted to shut their countries down to limit contact between humans. The type of stuff republicans and a few posters on her are mocking.

Haha, alrighty there Chief. Just because we disagree on the severity of the situation does not make me a clown. After all, I could just as easily say that your overreaction to this makes you the clown.

Be sure to keep buying up all of the toilet paper for a potential respiratory infection. I hear it works wonders.
